Jurors in the murder trial of former Stoughton police officer Matthew Farwell heard testimony from his twin brother, William Farwell, on Monday. The trial, taking place in Boston Federal Court, centers on the alleged sexual abuse and killing of Sandra Birchmore, a minor who died under suspicious circumstances.
Brother’s testimony
William Farwell testified that he had a sexual relationship with Birchmore while serving as a Stoughton police officer and that he received immunity from the Department of Justice for his cooperation. He said he was unaware of his brother’s sexual relationship with Birchmore in July 2018, the time the alleged abuse began.
Prosecutors noted that William Farwell is the only other person Massachusetts State Police interviewed during their investigation of Matthew Farwell.
Medical examiner’s revised findings
Medical examiner Dr. Capo Martinez initially ruled Birchmore’s death a suicide caused by asphyxia by hanging. After new information emerged, she changed the manner of death to “undetermined” while keeping the cause as asphyxia. Dr. Martinez testified that no one had asked her to consider homicide when she first examined the case.
Jurors also viewed graphic autopsy photographs showing Birchmore’s disheveled hair wrapped in the ligature. Surveillance video from Birchmore’s apartment, previously shown to the jury, depicted her hair in a tidy top‑knot bun, contrasting sharply with the tangled condition observed at the scene.
Evidence and investigation gaps
Dr. Martinez explained that she had not been provided with surveillance video from Birchmore’s apartment, details about her phone, information on visitors that night, or witness statements from law enforcement. Intake reports from police indicated no signs of trauma, and the doctor noted that no one asked her to consider whether the state of Birchmore’s hair might indicate trauma.
The prosecution presented additional evidence, including the graphic images of Birchmore’s body, to illustrate the severity of the case.
Next steps
William Farwell is scheduled to return to the stand on Tuesday for further questioning. The trial continues as the jury weighs the testimony and forensic evidence to determine Matthew Farwell’s guilt.
