Turnagain Arm’s Most Dramatic Picnic Spot Has a Secret: Beluga Point Delivers Every Time

There are places you visit once and forget, and then there are places that rearrange something inside you. Beluga Point, perched along the Seward Highway about 15 miles south of downtown Anchorage, belongs firmly in the second category. Pull off the highway, step out of the car, and the sheer scale of Turnagain Arm hits you all at once — a churning, silver-gray inlet flanked by the Chugach Mountains on one side and the Kenai Peninsula on the other, with the kind of sky above it that makes you wonder why you ever lived anywhere else.

The overlook sits right along the dramatic stretch of the Seward Highway that hugs the cliffside above Turnagain Arm, and it’s one of the most accessible jaw-dropping viewpoints in the entire state. There’s a proper pullout with parking, interpretive signs, and a short trail that threads along the rocky bluff — enough room to spread out, take your time, and actually absorb what you’re looking at rather than snapping a photo from the window and moving on. Do yourself a favor: don’t just snap and drive. Sit with it a while.

The name Beluga Point is not accidental. During late summer and early fall, beluga whales follow the salmon runs up through Turnagain Arm, and this overlook is one of the best places in Alaska to spot them from land. Bring binoculars. Scan the water patiently. That white flash you catch in your peripheral vision is not a wave — it’s a whale, and that realization never gets old no matter how many times it happens. Rangers and interpretive signs on-site help explain the tidal patterns and wildlife behavior, which makes the experience feel genuinely educational without being dry about it.

Beyond the wildlife, the tides here put on their own show. Turnagain Arm has one of the largest tidal differentials in North America — up to 38 feet between low and high tide — and at low tide the mudflats stretch out in an otherworldly expanse of rippled silt that glows gold in afternoon light. A word of genuine caution: those mudflats, as beautiful as they look, are notoriously dangerous quicksand-like traps. Stay on the rocks and the established trail, and admire the flats from a safe distance. The overlook gives you the perfect vantage point to do exactly that.

In winter, the scene shifts entirely. Snow blankets the Chugach peaks, ice forms in jagged patterns along the shore, and on clear days the whole panorama turns into something that feels more like a painting than a real place. Bore tides — those rare, rolling waves that surge up the arm with incoming tides — are worth timing your visit around as well. The Anchorage Daily News and several local apps publish bore tide schedules, and watching one roll in from Beluga Point is the kind of experience that people from Anchorage bring up in conversation for years afterward.

Pack a thermos of something hot, a good pair of gloves if you’re visiting outside of summer, and absolutely no agenda. Beluga Point rewards the unhurried. Whether you’re a first-time visitor trying to understand what makes Alaska feel mythic, or a longtime Anchorage resident who somehow hasn’t made the drive in too long, this overlook will deliver. It always does.
