Tucson Tamale Company Does One Thing, Seriously

The sign outside the original store on Speedway says “Tucson Tamale Company” in letters that are not trying to impress anyone. That’s pretty much the whole vibe.

This place opened in 2008 and has since grown to a few locations around town, but the Speedway location — a squat building near Campbell — is where most locals default. You walk in, there’s a glass case full of tamales, a small menu board, and a person behind the counter who is not interested in explaining what a tamale is. That’s fine. You shouldn’t need the explanation.

The selection on any given day runs somewhere between eight and twelve varieties. The traditional red chile pork is the benchmark: masa that’s dense without being gluey, filling that has actual heat and actual flavor rather than just salt. It’s about $4.25 per tamale, which sounds reasonable until you realize you’re going to eat three of them standing in the parking lot before you get home. Budget accordingly.

The green chile chicken is the one regulars bring up when arguing with people from other cities. It’s milder but not timid — there’s enough roasted chile flavor that you’re not eating chicken salad wrapped in corn dough. The sweet corn tamale, technically a dessert item, divides people pretty cleanly. It’s sweeter than you’d expect and not spiced, more like a soft pudding in masa form. Order one to see which camp you’re in.

Vegetarian and vegan options are taken seriously here, not treated as an afterthought. The black bean and cheese is legitimately good, not a consolation prize. If you’re feeding people with mixed dietary situations, this is one of the more practical spots in town to do it.

Everything is made in-house and sold fresh or frozen. The frozen ones reheat without embarrassing themselves, which makes this place genuinely useful for stocking a freezer before a camping trip or a week when you don’t want to cook. A dozen runs around $48-50 depending on what you pick.

Hours are roughly 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. They sell out of specific varieties as the day goes on, so if you have strong opinions about what you want, go earlier rather than later. Weekend afternoons can get a small line, but it moves fast — there’s not much to deliberate over. You either want tamales or you don’t.

Parking is a strip lot off Speedway. The interior seats maybe eight people at a couple of small tables, so this is mostly a takeout operation. There’s no atmosphere to speak of, which is accurate advertising. The focus is on what’s in the case.

Tucson Tamale has wholesale accounts at some local grocery stores too, but the selection is narrower and the freshness is not quite the same. If you’re going to do it, go to the actual store. It’s not a complicated trip, and it ends with tamales, which is a better outcome than most errands.
