Trump Administration Highlights Border Security, Crime Drops and Tax Relief Amid Mixed Economic Outlook

In a November 6, 2026 White House “Weekly Briefing,” President Trump and his team emphasized the progress made during the first year of his second term. The briefing, titled “President Trump’s Second Term: Promises Made, Promises Kept, Results Delivered,” lists 127 fulfilled pledges, spotlighting border security, immigration enforcement, crime reduction, tax policy and foreign‑policy achievements.

Border and Immigration Enforcement

Customs and Border Protection data show southwest‑border apprehensions at 98,708 for fiscal year 2026, a roughly 95 percent decline from the peak levels of the prior administration. Nationwide encounters are reported at the lowest point in agency history. The administration also notes zero Border Patrol releases of migrants into the interior for 17 consecutive months, the reinstated Remain‑in‑Mexico policy, an 80‑plus‑percent drop in refugee admissions, travel restrictions on nationals of 19 countries and the cessation of the CBP One app for entry scheduling.

Border‑wall construction has resumed, with about 250 miles of new barrier completed and substantial funding obligated. The White House claims the unauthorized‑immigrant population fell by at least 2.3 million, citing more than three million departures—including roughly 1.2 million formal removals—and nearly 1.3 million ICE arrests. The United States recorded negative net migration in 2025, the first such occurrence in at least five decades.

Crime and Public Safety

FBI statistics cited in the release indicate the national murder rate fell 18.1 percent in 2025, tying a record low, while violent crime posted its largest annual decline on record. Preliminary first‑half 2026 data suggest another 10 percent drop in violent crime and a 23 percent decline in murders. Drug‑overdose deaths are reported down more than 40 percent from their peak under the previous administration. Targeted federal interventions in Washington, D.C., are credited with steep local reductions in homicides and carjackings.

Economy, Taxes and Affordability

The administration highlights the Working Families Tax Cuts—officially the One Big Beautiful Bill Act—signed July 4, 2025. The legislation makes permanent key provisions of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, adds temporary deductions for tips, overtime and certain auto‑loan interest, expands the child tax credit and creates “Trump Accounts” for children. Treasury analyses say the majority of filers received tax relief, with notable absolute benefits for middle‑income households, though other analyses note larger percentage gains for higher earners and cuts to some social‑program funding.

On prices, the briefing points to a sharp decline in prescription‑drug costs, a September dip in grocery prices and lower auto‑insurance premiums, alongside the creation of more than one million private‑sector jobs and continued S&P 500 record highs. However, consumer‑price inflation is up 5.4 percent overall since the term began, gasoline prices have risen roughly 38 percent, and unemployment hovers near 4.1‑4.2 percent. National average gasoline prices, which were about $3.11‑$3.15 at inauguration, have climbed into the mid‑$4 range by fall 2026, a result of global oil markets and the ongoing Iran conflict. President Trump’s campaign promise of gasoline below $2 per gallon has not been realized.

Legal and Policy Limitations

The release lists an executive order ending birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants as a fulfilled promise. The Supreme Court, however, struck down that order in Trump v. Barbara on June 30, 2026, finding it violated the Fourteenth Amendment’s Citizenship Clause. Subsequent narrower orders have also faced injunctions, a fact omitted from the White House summary.

Foreign‑Policy and Defense Highlights

NATO allies agreed in 2025 to aim for defense spending of 5 percent of GDP by 2035, up from the historic 2‑percent target. The United States helped drive that shift, and defense spending has risen, though the goal remains a decade away and future governments could adjust the commitment. Military recruiting has improved, with services meeting recent goals; Pentagon officials describe the results as the best in more than 15 years, though analysts attribute much of the gain to programs introduced in 2022.

Energy and Investment

The administration reopened leasing in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, accelerated permitting for Alaska LNG and eased certain environmental‑review rules. While announced investment totals exceed $11 trillion—including $54 billion pledged for Alaska LNG from South Korea—most figures represent pledged plans rather than money already spent or contractually obligated.

Overall Assessment

President Trump’s second‑term record shows historic lows in border encounters and notable declines in violent crime, alongside tax relief and equity‑market gains. At the same time, rising inflation, higher gasoline prices and legal setbacks on immigration policy illustrate ongoing challenges for many Americans. The administration’s own briefing places the successes front and center, reflecting its commitment to restoring “sovereignty, strength and prosperity.”
