Toledo Area Jobs with Justice (JWJ) is stepping up to ensure every eligible citizen can exercise the constitutional right to vote. The nonprofit organization has launched a free‑ride program that picks up voters from their homes and delivers them to early‑voting sites or the polling place on Election Day, then returns them safely afterward.
Service details and early‑voting impact
Bob Lynn Jr., JWJ secretary, explained that the program operates throughout Lucas County and the northern portion of Wood County. “We pick you up at your place of residence and then we take you to vote at the voting place or at the early voting center, and then take you home,” he said.
Since the program began, more than 40 individuals have already received rides for early voting. An additional 25 rides are scheduled for Election Day, ensuring that transportation will not be a barrier for those who wish to cast their ballots.
Why transportation matters
According to Lynn, transportation has historically been one of the biggest obstacles to voting. “At the end of the day it’s important that we get everyone to vote because voting is our most precious thing, in my opinion. It is what the Constitution enables us to do; to vote and elect our politicians,” he said.
The program reflects a long‑standing commitment to civic participation. JWJ has offered free rides to the polls every year since 2004, a tradition that aligns with the community‑first values of personal responsibility and faith‑based service.
How to schedule a ride
Residents who need transportation can call 419‑868‑3669 to arrange a pickup. The service is open to all eligible voters in the covered counties, regardless of party affiliation or background.
Community response
Local leaders and faith‑based groups have praised the effort as a practical expression of stewardship and neighborly love. By removing a logistical hurdle, JWJ helps families and individuals fulfill their civic duty without compromising work schedules, childcare responsibilities, or health concerns.
In a time when many national headlines focus on partisan battles, this grassroots initiative reminds us that the foundation of a strong nation is built on ordinary citizens exercising their right to vote. The free‑ride program is a tangible example of how community organizations can support the Constitution‑guaranteed freedom to choose our leaders.
Looking ahead
JWJ plans to continue the service through the upcoming November elections and hopes to expand the model to additional neighboring counties in future cycles. The organization encourages volunteers and donors to support the effort, emphasizing that a thriving democracy depends on both participation at the ballot box and the infrastructure that makes that participation possible.
