Evansville police were called to an upstairs apartment on Queen Anne Drive around 4:50 a.m. on Friday after a resident reported a woman screaming for help. When officers arrived, they heard yelling inside and ordered the occupants to open the door.
According to the police report, Savanna Compton responded through the door, saying the inside handle was missing and asking officers to open it from the outside. When an officer turned the knob, Compton opened the door, blocked the entrance and pushed an officer back into the hallway. Officers pulled her away, but she broke free and grabbed another officer from behind.
While the struggle continued, Cambry Reiter entered the doorway holding a child in one hand and pushed an officer in the back with her other hand. Reiter initially refused to place the child on the floor, but was eventually handcuffed. During the search of Compton, officers found a small amount of marijuana in her pocket.
The report states that one of the women informed officers that Alexis Shimek, who had active warrants, was also inside the apartment. While officers were checking on two children and waiting for the Department of Child Services, Shimek arrived upstairs at about 5:50 a.m. She pulled away from officers, attempted to move toward the living area, and was subdued against a wall. While being placed in the back of a patrol car, Shimek kicked an officer in the knee, prompting officers to use a restraint system before transporting her to jail.
Both officers who were involved reported minor knee and arm pain from the physical confrontations. Later, while in a holding cell at the Vanderburgh County Jail, Reiter slipped one hand out of her handcuffs but was quickly re‑secured by officers.
Charges filed include:
- Savanna Compton – battery against a public safety officer, resisting law enforcement resulting in bodily injury, disorderly conduct, and possession of marijuana.
- Cambry Reiter – battery against a public safety officer, resisting law enforcement resulting in bodily injury, escape, and disorderly conduct.
- Alexis Shimek – battery against a public safety officer causing injury, resisting law enforcement, and several outstanding warrants.
All three women were booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail. The incident underscores the challenges officers face when responding to domestic disturbance calls and the importance of swift, decisive action to protect public safety.
