FORT WAYNE, IN — Early Tuesday morning, a three‑vehicle crash at the southbound I‑69 entrance ramp and County Road 11A resulted in one driver being hospitalized and a swift response from DeKalb County public‑safety agencies.
What happened
According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, the incident was reported at approximately 9:20 a.m. on November 3. The crash began when 26‑year‑old Rashid Bulongo of Indianapolis failed to stop at the intersection. Bulongo’s vehicle was struck by a 2003 Ford ambulance that had been decommissioned, driven by 26‑year‑old Evan Russell of Garrett.
The impact forced both vehicles into the southbound guardrail. A third vehicle, a 2026 Kenworth semi‑tractor‑trailer operated by 40‑year‑old Andrew Fether of Fort Wayne, was attempting to turn south onto I‑69 when Russell’s ambulance collided with it. The semi suffered only minor damage.
Injuries and emergency response
Bulongo was trapped inside his car and required extrication by fire personnel. He was transported to a local hospital with cuts, scrapes, and a chest injury. Both Russell and Fether reported no injuries.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Garrett Fire, Parkview EMS, C. Noel’s Towing, Jeff’s Towing, and DeKalb County Central Communications. The crash remains under investigation, and authorities continue to evaluate the role of alcohol, which they say is believed to have been a contributing factor.
Community impact
The collision caused temporary disruptions on I‑69 as crews worked to clear the scene and secure the guardrail. Motorists were advised to use alternate routes while the investigation continued. Local officials emphasized the importance of safe driving practices, especially on busy highway entrance ramps where visibility and stopping distance are critical.
DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson reminded residents that impaired driving endangers not only the driver but also passengers, first‑responders, and other road users. “We urge everyone to make responsible choices behind the wheel,” the spokesperson said.
Looking ahead
Authorities will complete a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash and whether any traffic‑law violations occurred. The findings will be shared with the public once the investigation is concluded.
Residents who witnessed the incident or have additional information are encouraged to contact the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
