According to WPBF, a fatal crash occurred just after 11:05 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 95 in northern Martin County, just south of St. Lucie County. A Toyota Camry traveling north in the outside lane at mile marker 112 left the lane and entered the right paved shoulder, where a tractor‑trailer was parked. The front right of the Camry struck the rear left of the trailer, causing the Camry to spin across all three northbound lanes before coming to rest on the left shoulder.
The collision resulted in three deaths. The victims were passengers in the Camry: a 34‑year‑old man and a 5‑year‑old boy, both residents of Port St. Lucie, and an unidentified woman. The driver, a 31‑year‑old woman also from Port St. Lucie, survived but was taken by ground ambulance to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach. An 11‑year‑old girl was air‑lifted to the same hospital by helicopter.
The driver of the tractor‑trailer, a 60‑year‑old man from Miami, was not injured in the incident. Emergency responders from the Florida Highway Patrol, Martin County Fire Rescue and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office arrived promptly, securing the scene and providing medical assistance. Because the crash blocked all northbound lanes, traffic was diverted off I‑95 at SW Martin Highway, causing significant delays for commuters traveling through the corridor.
Northbound lanes remained closed for several hours, reopening after 5 a.m. on Sunday. The closure underscored the importance of cautious driving on high‑speed corridors, especially when vehicles are positioned on the shoulder. Authorities have not released a definitive cause for why the Camry entered the shoulder, but the investigation continues under the direction of the Florida Highway Patrol.
What’s next: The Florida Highway Patrol will complete its investigation and release any additional findings. Motorists are advised to stay alert for possible traffic adjustments in the area and to follow any future guidance from local law‑enforcement agencies.
