Durant and Denison brought the spirit of Halloween to their downtown districts on Saturday, drawing thousands of children and families to safe, community‑focused celebrations.
Durant’s Main Street closes for trick‑or‑treat
The city of Durant shut down Main Street for its annual trick‑or‑treat event, beginning well before dusk. The street filled with families strolling from booth to booth, while local merchants set up candy stations for the eager youngsters.
Schyler Adams, owner of the Among the Pages bookstore in downtown Durant, praised the turnout. “It’s been great. The community has been awesome and the support has been amazing,” Adams said. “I get in on all of the community events, and the turnout for this was super awesome.”
Adams noted that her booth ran out of candy halfway through the evening, prompting her to promise a larger supply next year. She also highlighted the joy of seeing the youngest visitors. “The little babies, that’s my favorite part. I have a spooky baby who turned one today, so seeing all those little babies has been my favorite part,” she added.
Denison’s Monsters on Main draws crowds
As the sun set, Denison hosted its annual “Monsters on Main” celebration in the downtown area. Children filled their buckets with candy, and a lively costume contest took place on a stage set up for the occasion.
One participant, known locally as The Possum, sported a homemade costume that earned second place. “Everyone is here for a great time, candy, family, all that good stuff on Halloween,” The Possum said, reflecting the festive atmosphere.
Community spirit shines
Both cities reported clear weather throughout the evening, allowing families to enjoy the festivities without interruption. Local businesses reported increased foot traffic and expressed gratitude for the community’s support.
