The Woman Behind Vancouver’s Most Loyal Lunch Counter

Pam Gallagher gets to Main Street Deli & Café before six most mornings. By the time the door unlocks at nine, the soup is already on, the bread order has been checked twice, and she’s probably had a full conversation with her bread supplier about whether the sourdough ran short last Tuesday. She’s owned the place for eleven years and she still moves like someone who hasn’t decided whether she’s the owner or the head of the floor crew.

The deli sits on Main Street in downtown Vancouver, a couple blocks from the old courthouse, in a narrow storefront that fits maybe forty people if everyone’s friendly about it. Regulars fill most of those seats by noon. I first came in because a coworker mentioned Pam by name — not the restaurant, just Pam — which told me something before I ever sat down.

The menu is unapologetically simple. Soups, sandwiches, a rotating daily special that Pam writes on the chalkboard herself each morning. The turkey Reuben is what gets talked about most: thick-sliced smoked turkey, real sauerkraut, Swiss, and a Thousand Island that Pam makes in-house and will not explain further. It comes on marble rye and it’s around twelve dollars. The tomato bisque, available most days, is the kind of thing you order as a side and then eat so fast you feel slightly embarrassed. Bread comes from a local baker — she’s told me the name but I always forget to write it down.

What’s kept me coming back isn’t any single thing on the menu. It’s the rhythm of the place. Pam knows probably sixty percent of the people who walk in by name, and the other forty percent get treated like she’s about two visits away from knowing them too. She’ll ask a table of strangers if they’ve been in before, and if they say no, she’ll spend about ninety seconds telling them what she’d order if she were them. She’s usually right.

The space itself is unfussy — tile floors, mismatched chairs, a few small tables pressed close enough together that you’ll probably hear your neighbor’s work drama, which is fine because theirs is probably more interesting than yours. It’s the kind of room where people stay too long over coffee and nobody minds.

Lunch is the peak, so if you’re going on a weekday, aim for 11:30 or after 1:15 to avoid the courthouse and office crowd that packs the place between noon and one. Pam runs a tight operation but it can get stretched thin when every table fills at once. Parking on Main Street is metered; there’s a lot one block east that’s usually easier.

She closes at three. I’ve tested this by arriving at 2:55 and she was gracious about it, but I still felt bad. Go early, eat slow, tip well. The place runs on people who actually show up for it, and Pam Gallagher has been showing up since before most of her regulars knew the deli existed.
