The Boiler Room Under Drekker That Most People Walk Past

What exactly are you walking into when you head down those stairs off Broadway?

That’s the question most first-timers ask before their eyes adjust to the low light of The Boiler Room, the subterranean bar carved into the basement of the Brewhalla building in downtown Fargo. While the food hall upstairs runs loud and bright — communal tables, families, the general chaos of a weekend crowd — down here it’s a different register entirely. Exposed brick, original boiler infrastructure left in place, ceiling pipes you have to duck under in a few spots. The room feels genuinely old in a way that most new construction can’t fake.

The bar sits at the center of it. The bartenders move efficiently and without a lot of performance. You order, they pour, you find a spot. There are stools along the bar and some low seating tucked toward the back where the brick curves. It’s not a large room, and it fills up by nine on a Friday, so if you want to actually talk to the person you came with, earlier is smarter.

What you drink here matters. The tap list pulls from Drekker’s rotation, so you’re going to see some of their weirder experimental stuff — sour ales, heavily dry-hopped IPAs, the occasional collaboration pour — alongside the more approachable flagships. If you’re unfamiliar with the lineup, ask. The staff have opinions and they’ll share them. A pint runs you somewhere between five and eight dollars depending on what you pick, which is reasonable for what you’re getting.

The Boiler Room doesn’t try to be a music venue or a cocktail bar or a gastropub. It’s a beer bar that happens to occupy one of the more atmospheric spaces in the city. That specificity is what makes it work. There’s no trivia night branded content, no seasonal décor rotation. The room is the thing.

It’s worth noting that the bar is connected to Brewhalla, so if you’re hungry, you can bring food down from the vendors upstairs. That arrangement works better than you’d expect. Grab a banh mi or a slice from one of the counters above, carry it down, and you’ve got a proper evening without a reservation or a bill that requires math at the end.

Parking downtown on a Saturday night is the usual Fargo frustration — street spots fill up fast, and the lots near Broadway aren’t free after a certain hour. If you’re coming from the south end of the city, build in ten extra minutes. The entrance to the Boiler Room is on the Broadway-facing side of the building; there’s signage, but it’s modest.

Go on a Thursday if you can. The crowd is smaller, the room breathes, and you can actually hear the conversation you came to have. Friday and Saturday it earns its keep as a proper bar in the louder sense. Both versions have their use. The space works either way — it’s been here since before Fargo started paying attention to what was under its own streets, and it doesn’t need you to know that to be good at what it does.
