BEND, Ore. – The family of Becky Drury, the teacher wounded in the tragic mass shooting at Silver Rail Elementary on Oct. 15, announced that she is now recovering from her fourth and, they hope, final operation to rebuild her arm.
According to Drury’s husband, Will, the latest surgery repaired the connection between her arm and hand after the injury nearly severed it during the attack. He posted a photo of Drury in the hospital, smiling and holding what he called a “victory doughnut,” a small sign of optimism amid a difficult recovery.
Road to Physical and Mental Healing
Will Drury emphasized that while the surgical repairs are a critical step, his wife still faces a long journey ahead, both physically and mentally. The trauma of the shooting, which claimed the lives of special‑needs teacher Megan Lambert, 25, and three young students, continues to affect survivors and families.
In addition to Drury, a 7‑year‑old girl who was also shot survived and was moved out of the intensive care unit earlier this week, offering a glimmer of hope amid the sorrow.
School and Community Response
Silver Rail Elementary remains closed through at least this week as crews work to clean and repair the building. Bend‑La Pine Schools reported steady progress on the restoration effort, aiming to return the school to a safe learning environment as soon as possible.
The district also released a list of resources for affected families, including childcare options through the Boys & Girls Clubs and the Bend FC Timbers, as well as grab‑and‑go free school meals. Community members have rallied around the school, and a verified GoFundMe hub has been set up to support the families of victims and those recovering from injuries.
Community Support and Faith
Local churches and faith‑based groups have organized prayer vigils and counseling services, underscoring the community’s commitment to healing and resilience. Parents and neighbors have expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support, noting that the collective response reflects the strong family and faith values that define Bend.
As the investigation continues, police have confirmed that the shooter, a 16‑year‑old former student, was also killed in the incident. Authorities are working with school officials to ensure safety protocols are reviewed and strengthened.
While the path to full recovery will be challenging, the Drury family’s update offers a hopeful sign that medical care and community solidarity are helping to mend both bodies and spirits after this devastating event.
