TDOT Schedules I‑65 Bridge Closure Over Hamilton Avenue During TSU and Vanderbilt Homecoming Weekend

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) announced that Interstate 65 will be closed in both directions between the I‑40 and I‑440 interchanges beginning Friday, Oct. 16 at 8 p.m. and reopening Monday, Oct. 19 at 5 a.m. The shutdown is required to demolish the Hamilton Avenue bridge, which spans I‑65 south of downtown Nashville.

Why the timing matters

Weekend homecoming celebrations at Tennessee State University (TSU) and Vanderbilt University are expected to draw thousands of visitors to Nashville. City leaders, university officials, and local business owners voiced concerns that the closure could complicate travel plans.

“TSU homecoming is like a festival. It’s like an anniversary; it’s a holiday here,” said Carlos Partee, CEO and co‑founder of Nashville Black Market, a nonprofit that supports North Nashville merchants. Partee’s organization will host events on Buchanan Street during the weekend, giving visitors a chance to shop locally.

TDOT’s rationale

TDOT officials explained that no weekend is ideal for a major interstate closure near downtown, but the agency selected this period after reviewing traffic data and projected event attendance. A department spokesperson told NewsChannel 5 that the agency coordinated with TSU, Vanderbilt, Nissan Stadium and Metro Nashville partners before finalizing the schedule. The demolition must begin promptly to allow the new bridge deck to be completed by the end of the year.

Advice for motorists

TDOT urges drivers to plan ahead, use alternate routes and allow extra travel time. Vehicles can cross I‑65 via Chestnut Street or Wedgewood Avenue while the Hamilton Avenue bridge remains closed to both cars and pedestrians. Additional ramp closures at Armory Drive and Powell Avenue will help manage traffic merging onto I‑440.

Motorists are also encouraged to consider ride‑share services, carpooling with friends, or using public‑transit options. “You should get your Uber, get your ride shares, call your friends, get everybody on the line and figure out what your plans are going to be,” Partee advised.

Impact on local businesses

Despite the inconvenience, Partee believes the weekend remains an opportunity to showcase Nashville’s culture and support local merchants. He noted that the timing of the bridge work was not ideal, but the need for infrastructure improvements outweighs the short‑term disruption.

What to expect after the weekend

Following the weekend shutdown, crews will conduct intermittent overnight lane closures between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. as they construct the new bridge deck. Overhead signs, electronic message boards and TDOT HELP operators will provide real‑time updates. Drivers using Wedgewood Avenue and surrounding streets should anticipate heavier traffic and possible delays.

The bridge project is weather‑dependent, but TDOT expects construction to be finished by early December. For live traffic conditions, motorists can visit the TDOT SmartWay Map or call 511.

Community response

Local residents and event organizers expressed mixed feelings. While many appreciate the long‑term benefits of a modern bridge, they also recognize the short‑term challenges for visitors attending homecoming festivities. The consensus is that careful planning and cooperation will keep the celebrations lively and the city moving safely.
