Tampa Police Respond to Fatal Bicyclist Crash on East Hillsborough Avenue

Early Monday morning, Tampa Police Department (TPD) responded to a tragic collision on the 3600 block of East Hillsborough Avenue. At approximately 5:43 a.m., officers were dispatched after receiving reports of a vehicle‑bicyclist crash near the Live Oaks Square neighborhood in East Tampa.

Fatality confirmed at the scene

When officers arrived, they found a male bicyclist who had sustained critical injuries. Despite rapid medical assistance, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the bicyclist has not yet been released pending notification of family members.

Driver remains on site and cooperates

Police confirmed that the driver of the vehicle involved remained at the crash site and is cooperating fully with the investigation. No arrests have been made, and TPD has not disclosed further details about the driver or the vehicle.

Traffic impact and detours

In response to the incident, TPD closed a portion of Hillsborough Avenue between 34th Street and 37th Street. Motorists are being directed to use alternate routes while investigators secure the area and gather evidence. The closure is expected to remain in place until the investigation is complete.

Investigation ongoing

TPD investigators are reviewing all available evidence, including dash‑camera footage, witness statements, and physical evidence from the scene. At this time, officials have not indicated whether any criminal charges or traffic citations will be issued. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Community response

The Tampa cycling community expressed sorrow over the loss, emphasizing the need for continued awareness of road safety for both motorists and cyclists. Local advocacy groups have called for increased signage and safer bike lanes in high‑traffic corridors such as Hillsborough Avenue.

What residents can do

Drivers traveling through the affected stretch are urged to follow posted detour signs and exercise caution. Cyclists are reminded to wear helmets, use lights after dark, and stay visible to motorists. Anyone with additional information about the crash is encouraged to contact the Tampa Police Department’s traffic division.

The investigation is in its early stages, and TPD will provide updates as new details emerge.
