In a hands‑on effort to give back to the Syracuse community, the Syracuse University women’s basketball team partnered with the nonprofit Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) to build fifteen twin‑size beds for children facing difficult living conditions.
Community service before the season
Coach Felisha Legette‑Jack praised the players for their humility and gratitude, noting that the project offered a lasting impact beyond the scoreboard. “You’re not going to remember beating UConn on Monday, but you’ll remember this because it changes lives,” she said.
David Hoalcraft, co‑president of SHP’s Syracuse chapter, echoed the sentiment, calling the team’s involvement “amazing” and highlighting the organization’s mission to provide safe sleeping arrangements for kids ages three through seventeen.
About Sleep in Heavenly Peace
Founded in 2012, Sleep in Heavenly Peace operates roughly 440 chapters nationwide, including the Syracuse branch. The group builds twin‑size beds and supplies bedding at no cost to families, aiming to improve the daily lives of children living in unfavorable conditions.
Future delivery and ongoing support
The fifteen beds were assembled on Saturday and will be delivered to families at a later date. The partnership was selected by the SU Sports Management Club as the beneficiary of the 22nd annual Syracuse University Charity Auction, scheduled for November 18 during the men’s basketball game against Cornell University at the JMA Wireless Dome.
Last year’s auction raised a record‑breaking $76,540 for Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, underscoring the university’s commitment to community outreach and charitable giving.
