Syracuse Public Works Sets Flashing Signals at Two Intersections for Winter Safety

In a practical move to protect motorists during the region’s harsh winter months, the City of Syracuse announced that two key intersections will operate with flashing traffic signals beginning Sunday, Nov. 1. The Department of Public Works will install flashing yellow lights on South Geddes Street and Grant Boulevard, and flashing red lights on West Onondaga Street and Lemoyne Avenue. These temporary configurations will remain in effect until April 1.

Why flashing signals?

Flashing yellow signals tell drivers to slow down and proceed with caution, while flashing red signals require a full stop and yielding to pedestrians and other vehicles with the right of way. By simplifying the signal pattern, the city hopes to reduce confusion and collisions when snow, ice, and reduced daylight make traditional light cycles harder to see.

Seasonal safety routine

The change is part of Syracuse’s twice‑yearly safety program. Each fall, the city reviews high‑traffic corridors that are prone to winter‑related incidents and adjusts signal timing or phasing accordingly. The Department of Public Works says the selected intersections have historically seen a higher rate of minor crashes during the first weeks of snow, prompting the proactive adjustment.

What drivers need to know

  • South Geddes Street & Grant Boulevard: Expect flashing yellow lights. Reduce speed, stay alert, and be prepared to stop if conditions require.
  • West Onondaga Street & Lemoyne Avenue: Expect flashing red lights. Come to a complete stop, yield to pedestrians and on‑coming traffic, then proceed when safe.

Motorists are urged to keep a safe following distance, use headlights, and clear snow and ice from windshields and windows before traveling. The city also reminds drivers to check tire tread and consider winter tires for added traction.

Community response

Local residents and business owners have expressed support for the measure, noting that clearer signals can help prevent accidents that disrupt daily life and commerce. “We appreciate the city taking steps to keep our streets safe,” said a longtime shop owner on South Geddes. “Winter driving is already challenging; anything that reduces confusion is welcome.”

The Department of Public Works will monitor traffic flow and safety data throughout the season. If the flashing signals prove effective, the city may consider expanding the program to additional intersections in future winters.

Looking ahead

Beyond the immediate safety benefits, the city’s approach reflects a broader commitment to proactive infrastructure management. By adjusting traffic controls before severe weather hits, Syracuse aims to minimize emergency response demands and keep commuters moving smoothly.

Drivers can find more information on the city’s website or contact the Department of Public Works directly for any questions about the upcoming changes.
