Swanton, Ohio – On Sunday night, the Swanton Police Department activated a public‑safety alert, urging all residents to shelter in place while officers conduct a search for an individual who is believed to be armed and dangerous. The alert covers the area around North Main Street (State Highway 64) and Valley Woods Drive.
What residents are being asked to do
Police Chief Trejo instructed community members to remain inside their homes, lock all exterior doors and windows, and refrain from any non‑essential travel. Anyone who observes suspicious activity or hears unusual noises is asked to call 911 immediately. The department emphasized that compliance with the shelter‑in‑place order is essential for keeping families safe.
Details of the investigation
At this time, the police have not released a description of the suspect, nor have they explained why the individual is considered dangerous. The investigation is ongoing, and officers are canvassing the specified neighborhoods, speaking with witnesses and checking surveillance footage where available.
How the community can stay informed
The Swanton Police Department will provide updates through its official website and social‑media channels. Residents are encouraged to monitor these sources for any changes to the shelter‑in‑place order or additional instructions. The department also asked the public to avoid posting unverified rumors that could cause unnecessary alarm.
Why the response matters
Swift cooperation with law‑enforcement directives helps protect families and allows officers to focus resources on locating the suspect. By limiting movement and securing homes, the community reduces the chance of accidental encounters and gives police a safer environment to conduct their search.
What to expect next
Authorities will continue to patrol the affected streets and may expand the search area if new information emerges. The shelter‑in‑place order will remain in effect until the police publicly announce that the threat has been neutralized or the suspect has been apprehended. Residents should remain patient and follow official guidance until the situation is resolved.
