On Oct. 19, a vehicle believed to be operated by an impaired driver collided with a residence on Sundial Key Drive in Ocoee, Florida. The crash struck the side of the home, coming perilously close to one of the children’s bedrooms, but no family members were physically injured.
Tragic loss of a beloved pet
The impact killed the family’s dog, which had been tied up by the front door. “They’re nice people, a young family with two little kids. It could have been a lot worse,” neighbor Johnny Chinapen said. “I mean, the dog was tied up by the front door.”
Driver arrested and charged
Police identified the driver as 30‑year‑old Marcus Zamora. He was taken into custody and is now facing DUI charges. After posting bond, Zamora was released from the Orange County Jail.
Community response and police reminder
Neighbors expressed concern that the family may not return to the home. “I don’t believe they’ll be coming back,” Chinapen added. He also noted that traffic incidents are common on the street, citing previous crashes involving trees, ditches, and a motorcycle flip.
Officer Duran of the Ocoee Police Department used the incident to remind residents of the dangers of impaired driving. “Don’t drive under the influence; it doesn’t just affect you. It affects everybody else around you,” he said.
Impact on the neighborhood
The home has been condemned by the city, leaving the family without a place to live while they seek alternative housing. The incident underscores the broader issue of reckless driving in the area, prompting local officials to consider additional safety measures.
What residents can do
Authorities encourage anyone who suspects impaired driving to report the behavior immediately. They also advise drivers to plan alternative transportation options, such as designated drivers, rideshare services, or public transit, especially during evenings and weekends when alcohol consumption tends to increase.
As the community rallies around the displaced family, the Ocoee Police Department continues to monitor traffic patterns on Sundial Key Drive and surrounding streets, aiming to prevent future tragedies.
