Sunset at Wet Willie’s Daiquiri Bar Starts Earlier Than You Think

It was about 4:30 on a Thursday when I finally wandered into Wet Willie’s on Ocean Boulevard, mostly because the sun had turned the beach into a griddle and I needed somewhere to sit down with a cold drink. I’d walked past the place a dozen times over the years—it’s hard to miss, right on the strip with its bright signage and the faint hum of a blender always going—but I’d written it off as tourist territory. I was wrong to do that for so long.

Wet Willie’s is a small regional chain out of Savannah, and this Myrtle Beach outpost has been on Ocean Boulevard for a good while now. The setup is simple: you walk up to a counter lined with stainless-steel dispensers, each one labeled with a name like Call-a-Cab, Jungle Juice, or Sex on the Beach. The cups come in sizes from medium to enormous. You pick your poison, pay your $8 to $14 depending on size and flavor, and find a stool or a table on the open-air deck that looks out over the Boulevard toward the ocean.

I went with the Call-a-Cab, their signature, which is a deep burgundy-purple grape and grain concoction that tastes like a slushie your parents definitely didn’t make. It’s sweet without being cloying, and there’s no question it has real alcohol in it—Georgia law apparently requires them to make the drinks strong enough to qualify as mixed drinks, and they carry that standard to South Carolina. After two-thirds of a large, I understood the name.

What I didn’t expect was how much I’d enjoy just sitting there. The deck catches the late-afternoon breeze off the water, and at that hour the tourist traffic on the sidewalk below is more entertainment than annoyance. Families dragging beach gear, couples hunting for dinner spots, the occasional guy on a moped making questionable decisions—it’s a good people-watching perch. The staff were friendly in a way that felt genuine rather than scripted; my server was from Conway and had opinions about which flavors were overrated (Watermelon, apparently) and which ones she actually liked (Miami Vice, which layers strawberry and piña colada).

Food isn’t the point here, but they do have a short snack menu—nachos, soft pretzels, that kind of thing. I got the pretzel bites mostly to slow the Call-a-Cab down, and they were fine. Warm, salty, exactly what they needed to be.

The place fills up fast after 5 p.m. on weekends, so the mid-afternoon window is genuinely the move. Parking on Ocean Boulevard is its usual nightmare, but the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk parking structure is a few blocks north and usually has room. If you’re already walking the Boardwalk, it’s an easy detour south.

Wet Willie’s isn’t trying to be anything other than what it is: a cold, boozy slushie bar a short walk from the beach. There’s real value in that kind of honesty. I finished my drink watching the shadow of the SkyWheel stretch across the boulevard, tipped a few dollars, and left feeling significantly more charitable about the rest of the afternoon than I had when I walked in. That’s probably the best thing I can say about any bar.
