Stroll, Sip, and Stay Awhile: The Unbothered Pleasures of Olinger’s Beloved Cheesman Park

There is a park in Denver that locals guard with a quiet kind of pride. It does not have paddle boats or a zoo or a splash pad. It has something rarer: genuine stillness, staggering mountain views, and an atmosphere so convivial and unrushed that you will find yourself lingering on the grass long after you planned to leave. Cheesman Park, tucked into the Congress Park neighborhood just east of Capitol Hill, is one of the most quietly magnificent open spaces in the entire city — and if you have never spent a Sunday afternoon here, you are overdue.

The park occupies 81 acres of beautifully maintained grounds, and the moment you step through the perimeter onto its wide, gentle slopes, the city seems to exhale around you. A broad promenade circles the main lawn, making it an ideal loop for a relaxed morning jog or an evening walk with a good podcast. But Cheesman rewards those who slow down most of all. Find a spot on the grass, face west, and on a clear day — which in Denver is most days — you will see the entire Front Range laid out before you like a postcard that nobody had the nerve to send because it seems too good to be true.

The park’s centerpiece is the Cheesman Park Pavilion, a neoclassical structure completed in 1910 that looks as though it was lifted wholesale from a Roman forum and set down, thoughtfully, in the middle of Colorado. With its columned rotunda and sweeping views in every direction, it is one of the most photogenic architectural landmarks in Denver that most visitors walk right past. Do not be that visitor. Walk up to it, stand inside it, look out at the skyline, and take a moment to appreciate that Denver has been doing civic beauty for well over a century.

The neighborhood surrounding Cheesman is every bit as worthwhile as the park itself. The Congress Park and Cheesman Park neighborhoods are dense with Victorian and Craftsman homes, independent coffee shops, and the kind of tree-lined streets that make you want to move somewhere immediately. Grab a coffee from a nearby café before your visit and carry it in — there is no better accompaniment to a slow circuit of the promenade on a Saturday morning when the light is gold and the mountains are out.

Cheesman also draws one of Denver’s most wonderfully eclectic crowds. On any given afternoon you will find yoga practitioners on the upper lawn, families with dogs, couples reading side by side, and groups of friends who seem to have claimed their patch of grass for life. It is a welcoming place, easy and unpretentious, without the crowds that descend on bigger destination parks.

Parking is available along the surrounding streets, and the park is easily accessible by bike from the Cherry Creek Trail system. There is no admission, no wristband, and no schedule. You simply show up, and Cheesman takes care of the rest. If Denver has a heartbeat on a lazy afternoon, this is where you will feel it most clearly.
