Taos, NM – The Stray Hearts Animal Shelter released its latest weekly report covering the period of Oct. 12‑19. The nonprofit, which relies on community volunteers and donations, provided a snapshot of its current operations and highlighted an adoptable dog named Chaco.
Weekly shelter statistics
During the reporting week the shelter cared for a total of 123 animals. Seventeen new animals were taken in, while no animals were transferred out of the facility. The shelter continues to place a strong emphasis on foster care, with 22 animals currently residing in foster homes throughout the region.
Food consumption remains a major logistical concern; the shelter distributed 308 pounds of pet food to its residents. Community outreach efforts included 12 meet‑and‑greet events where prospective adopters could interact with the animals. The week concluded with 10 successful adoptions, a modest but encouraging increase that reflects the dedication of local volunteers and the generosity of Taos residents.
Meet Chaco – a friendly, well‑trained companion
Among the dogs available for adoption is Chaco, a two‑year‑old male pit‑bull terrier‑chocolate Labrador retriever mix weighing about 84 pounds. Shelter staff report that Chaco walks well on a leash, reliably responds to the command “sit,” and gets along with other dogs. He enjoys walks, playtime and being petted, making him a great candidate for an active family.
Because Chaco has a tendency to escape, the shelter advises that any prospective home provide a securely fenced yard. Potential adopters are encouraged to meet Chaco during the shelter’s public adoption hours, Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
