Step Inside the Slaughterhouse That Became Indianapolis’s Most Unexpected Art Destination

There is a moment, right after you pull into the parking lot of the Indianapolis Art Center in the Broad Ripple neighborhood, when you realize this place is not going to be what you expected. The building itself — a sprawling, light-filled structure designed by renowned architect Woollen, Molzan and Partners — curves and opens toward a sculpture garden that spills right out into the lawn along the White River corridor. It feels less like an institution and more like an invitation.

The Indianapolis Art Center has been a fixture of this city’s creative life since 1934, and yet it remains one of those places that even longtime residents sometimes overlook in favor of the bigger, more ticketed attractions downtown. That is their loss, and potentially your discovery. Admission to the galleries is free, which already puts it in a category of its own.

On a recent Tuesday afternoon, I wandered through two concurrent exhibitions — one showcasing large-scale ceramic sculpture by regional artists, and another presenting intimate printmaking work that was so technically precise it stopped me mid-step. The Art Center rotates its shows regularly, so there is nearly always something new to encounter. The work here skews contemporary and often experimental, which gives the galleries an energy that feels genuinely alive rather than archival.

But the real heart of this place is its studio arts programming. The Art Center offers hundreds of classes each year — ceramics, painting, drawing, glassblowing, jewelry making, photography, and more — open to adults and children at virtually every skill level. If you happen to be visiting Indianapolis for more than a day or two, drop-in workshops are often available, and there is something deeply satisfying about leaving a city with something you made with your own hands as a souvenir.

The ArtsPark that surrounds the building deserves its own paragraph. Fourteen acres of outdoor sculpture installations, native plantings, winding paths, and open lawn stretch along the White River, and it is the kind of place where you can spend an hour without realizing it. Local families bring picnics here. Artists sketch in the shade. On weekend mornings, it has the unhurried, generous atmosphere of a neighborhood that is comfortable in its own skin.

The gift shop is worth a deliberate stop as well. Nearly everything sold there is made by Indiana artists, and the selection — from hand-thrown pottery to letterpress prints to woven textiles — is thoughtfully curated rather than tourist-generic.

Broad Ripple itself is walkable and charming, lined with independent restaurants, coffee shops, and boutiques that reward a slow afternoon. The Art Center sits at 820 East 67th Street, close enough to the neighborhood’s main corridor that combining a visit with lunch or dinner feels natural rather than forced.

If Indianapolis has a creative soul — and it absolutely does — the Indianapolis Art Center is one of the clearest expressions of it. Go without expectations, and come home a convert.
