Stella’s Kitchen Has Fed Billings for Thirty Years Running

Stella’s Kitchen & Bakery on North 29th Street has served breakfast every single day since 1993 — which means it has outlasted at least three generations of downtown Billings trends, two recessions, and a pandemic that shuttered plenty of places that seemed far more invulnerable.

The woman most responsible for that durability is Kim Larson, who bought Stella’s years after its original founding and has run it with a steadiness that doesn’t invite much drama. Regular customers describe her the same way: she remembers names, she remembers orders, and she has an opinion about hash browns that she will share if asked. The kitchen is not especially large. The dining room is not especially quiet. On a Saturday morning, there is a line out the door before 9 a.m., and nobody in it seems particularly bothered.

What Stella’s does is breakfast, and it does it with the kind of volume and consistency that requires real systems. The cinnamon rolls are the item most likely to appear in a stranger’s social media feed — they are the size of a dinner plate and arrive glazed and still pulling apart in the center. Order one and plan accordingly. The eggs Benedict comes on housemade English muffins, which is not a detail most places bother with. The biscuits and gravy hit the table fast and stay hot longer than they should.

The menu runs wide: omelets stuffed past what seems geometrically possible, pancakes in multiple configurations, a breakfast burrito that is a full meal by any honest accounting. Prices remain reasonable by any standard — most plates land between ten and fifteen dollars, and the cinnamon roll is around six. Coffee is diner coffee, refilled without being asked, and nobody is going to upsell an oat milk alternative.

The crowd on a weekday morning skews toward contractors eating before a job site, retirees who have been coming since the Clinton administration, and the occasional out-of-towner who did their research. On weekends, it broadens — families, hungover college students, people who drove in from the Heights specifically for the rolls. The wait on a busy Sunday can stretch to forty-five minutes, and Stella’s does not take reservations. That is the deal.

The room itself is straightforward — booths, tables close together, walls with the kind of local art and old photographs that accumulate in a place that has been open long enough to become part of a neighborhood’s memory. There is nothing performative about the décor. It looks like a place that has had other things to worry about.

What keeps people returning, beyond the food, is something harder to quantify: the sense that Stella’s is genuinely indifferent to being fashionable. It opened before farm-to-table was a phrase anyone used in Billings, and it has watched that wave come and recede without adjusting its biscuit recipe. Larson’s staff includes people who have worked there for years, which is its own kind of signal. Turnover in restaurant kitchens is notoriously brutal; the fact that the same cooks are still running the same line says something about how the place is managed.

Stella’s is at 2525 North 29th Street, open daily starting at 7 a.m. Get there early if the cinnamon roll matters to you. It will be gone by mid-morning, and the kitchen does not make more.
