St. Petersburg Deploys 100+ Police, Drones and K‑9 Teams for World Series Games

St. Petersburg is gearing up for a massive influx of visitors as the Tampa Bay Rays host Games 3, 4 and, if necessary, 5 of the 2026 World Series at Tropicana Field. Mayor Ken Welch and Police Chief Anthony Holloway said the city expects roughly 40,000 fans at each sold‑out game, with an additional 15,000‑20,000 people gathering elsewhere in downtown, bringing the total expected attendance to over 100,000 across the series.

To manage the crowds, the police department will assign more than 100 uniformed officers and deploy undercover officers, K‑9 teams, and aerial drones. The drones will monitor vehicle and pedestrian traffic and help officers respond quickly to any suspicious activity. An emergency operations center at the St. Petersburg Police Department will coordinate with state and federal law‑enforcement partners, ensuring a unified response to any incident.

Chief Holloway emphasized that traffic will be the biggest challenge. “Our biggest issue is going to be traffic,” he told reporters. Gates at Tropicana Field will open three hours before first pitch, giving fans extra time to arrive. After the final out, officials expect a surge of roughly 40,000 people leaving the stadium at once. Pedestrians will receive priority, and drivers parked near the venue should be prepared for delays.

Parking costs around the stadium are expected to average $150 per game, but downtown options can be as low as $25. Fans can take city shuttles from downtown lots to the ballpark, though Holloway warned that shuttle return trips may take longer due to the post‑game crowd.

The city’s preparations also account for potential celebrations if the Rays advance further or win the championship. The emergency operations center can quickly deploy barricades or other resources to keep celebrations safe and orderly.

Beyond security, the World Series marks a symbolic milestone for a community still rebuilding from Hurricane Milton two years ago. Mayor Welch noted that the event showcases the city’s resilience, saying, “The real celebration is how far this community’s come back in two years.”

According to the Orlando Sentinel, six players in the series have Florida roots—four with the Rays and two with the Brewers—highlighting the regional connection and adding local interest for fans.

What’s next: Game 3 is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 26, followed by Game 4 on Tuesday, Oct. 27, and a potential Game 5 on Wednesday, Oct. 28. All games are slated to begin around 8 p.m. Residents and visitors are encouraged to follow police directions, use downtown parking and shuttles, and stay informed through city updates.
