Springfield, Ill. – The Animal Protective League (APL) is working to restore operations after a recent storm destroyed its main facility. While searching for a permanent location, the nonprofit is using foster homes across the city and temporary spaces, including a possible office in train cars.
Recovery efforts and community support
Jeff Cunningham, APL’s director, said the organization is negotiating for a new building but has not yet identified a site. In the meantime, staff are spread among several locations, with veterinarians operating out of Coble Animal Hospital and others assisting at Sangamon County Animal Control. A temporary donation center has also been set up for the public.
Before the storm, APL cared for 155 animals. The day after the damage, nearly 700 community members offered to foster animals, providing a crucial “silver lining” that raised awareness and support for the shelter.
Upcoming fundraisers
To fund its recovery, APL has scheduled three major events:
- Annual Chili Supper – Oct. 25, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. at the Columbian Grand Hall on Springfield’s west side. The event, a 30‑year tradition, expects about 1,000 attendees. Tickets are $12 and include chili, a choice of cornbread or a hot dog, dessert and a drink. Quart‑size chili portions can be pre‑ordered online for pickup.
- Fall Trivia Night – Nov. 6, also at the Columbian Grand Hall. This year’s Dr. Seuss theme features a table‑decorating contest and special trivia rounds. Tables of 10 cost $150; a $250 VIP package adds two large two‑topping pizzas, 10 drink tickets and premium seating.
- Paws and Claus – Nov. 14 at Scoop du Jour in Chatham. Attendees can purchase 15‑minute photo sessions with Santa for $20, with larger photo packages available through Photography by Rob.
All events will include silent auctions and 50/50 drawings to further support the shelter’s rebuilding. Tickets and details are available on APL’s website, apl-shelter.org.
Adoption and foster opportunities
Dogs and cats continue to be cared for in foster homes throughout Springfield. Prospective adopters can view available animals, photos and biographies in the “Adopt” section of the APL website and arrange meet‑and‑greets via the provided contact information.
The organization remains grateful for the outpouring of donations, storage space for supplies, and volunteer effort that are helping it move toward a permanent home.
