Springfield adds Young‑Lilley to its roster of registered neighborhood associations

Springfield, Mo. – The City of Springfield has officially recognized the Young‑Lilley neighborhood as its newest registered neighborhood association. Located south of Chestnut Expressway and west of West Bypass, the area has long been home to families who felt under‑represented in city communications.

Why neighborhood associations matter

Unlike homeowners’ associations, Springfield’s neighborhood associations do not impose rules or fees. Instead, they serve as a conduit between residents and city services, offering a platform for monthly gatherings, community events and direct access to city‑run grant programs, clean‑up initiatives and the Neighborhood Advisory Council.

Residents welcome formal representation

“We’ve got a great grouping of people, and it’s so diverse,” said Ariele Lee, treasurer of the Young‑Lilley association. “Why not share this space with other people? Why not enjoy this beautiful park, make it even more beautiful and more hospitable so we can have these events together and build that community?” Lee, a four‑year resident, added that learning other board members lived just down the street made the new association feel like an extension of the neighborhood’s natural bonds.

Reaching seniors and those without digital access

President Gabriel Saenz highlighted a key benefit of the association: reaching older residents who may not use email or social media. “There’s a lot of older folks here who maybe don’t have communication through the regular means, the digital methods don’t really get to them,” Saenz explained. “Programs like firefighter support, health initiatives and community assistance become much easier to deliver when we have a trusted local voice.

City planners applaud the effort

Springfield senior planner Hanna Knopf praised the grassroots momentum. “It’s been so empowering to see those neighbors come together, care about each other and care about what’s going on in the community,” Knopf said. She noted that while the area has not faced major safety concerns, the association’s focus on neighborly support and shared stewardship of public spaces reflects the city’s broader goal of fostering strong, faith‑centered families.

More neighborhoods joining the list

Young‑Lilley is not the only addition this fall. The East Central neighborhood was also officially registered in October, and city officials anticipate at least one more new association before the year ends. Each new group expands the city’s network of local volunteers, giving residents a clearer line to city resources and a stronger voice in neighborhood‑level decision‑making.

How to get involved

Residents interested in joining the Young‑Lilley association or starting a new group can contact the City of Springfield’s Neighborhood Services Department. The department provides guidance on registration, meeting logistics and applying for city‑funded grants. As more neighborhoods become formally recognized, Springfield hopes to build a tighter fabric of community, rooted in shared values and mutual assistance.
