Henderson, Nev. – On Saturday morning, families, community partners and local volunteers converged on Cowabunga Bay for the third annual Special Olympics Nevada Truck Pull. The event, organized by Special Olympics Nevada, invited teams of eight to test their strength by pulling three massive trucks across the water‑park’s parking lot.
Community participation fuels the pull
More than 30 teams signed up, each eager to demonstrate teamwork and raise money for the organization’s programs. “It’s really cool to see them come together and pull those massive trucks,” said Jezz Medina‑Manning, Development Manager for Special Olympics Nevada. Medina‑Manning noted that attendance has grown each year, reflecting increasing community support for inclusion.
Support from local agencies and partners
The event received backing from a range of local agencies, including the Nevada Department of Corrections, the North Las Vegas Police Department and host Shawn Tempesta, who helped coordinate logistics. Special Olympics Nevada athletes also took part, cheering on participants and sharing personal stories about how the organization’s sports, education and health programs have impacted their lives.
Family‑friendly activities
Beyond the truck‑pulling competition, the morning featured free family activities. A “trunk‑or‑treat” station allowed children to collect candy from decorated vehicle trunks, while a variety of games kept attendees of all ages entertained. The festive atmosphere underscored the event’s dual purpose: raising funds and fostering community bonds.
Funds directed to vital programs
All proceeds from the Truck Pull will support Special Olympics Nevada’s core initiatives, including sports training, educational opportunities, athlete leadership development and health services for athletes with intellectual disabilities. These programs aim to empower participants, promote physical fitness and encourage social inclusion across the state.
Looking ahead
Organizers expressed optimism about future events, citing the growing turnout and enthusiastic volunteer base. “We’re excited to see how this event continues to expand and bring more people together for a great cause,” Medina‑Manning added. The next Truck Pull is already in the planning stages, with hopes of attracting even larger crowds and additional community partners.
Special Olympics Nevada encourages anyone interested in supporting its mission to attend upcoming events, volunteer, or donate directly through its website.
