Spearfish, S.D. – Starting Friday, Oct. 16, the City of Spearfish will launch a sewer improvement project near the intersection of Grant and 12th streets. Municipal Pipe Tool Company of Hudson, Iowa, has been contracted to employ cured‑in‑place pipe (CIPP) technology, a trenchless method that repairs aging sewer lines without the need for extensive excavation.
How the trenchless process works
The CIPP technique involves inserting a resin‑coated liner into the existing pipe. Once in place, the liner is inflated and the resin is cured, creating a brand‑new pipe inside the old conduit. This approach reduces the need for digging, limits traffic disruptions, and protects nearby homes and businesses from the mess and cost of traditional pipe replacement.
What residents can expect
Work crews, trucks, hoses and steam equipment will be visible in the project area. During the curing phase, a temporary chemical odor may be noticeable for a few hours. To mitigate the smell, the contractor will add a bubble‑gum fragrance to the curing mixture.
The city advises residents to be prepared for occasional vapors that can travel through dry plumbing fixtures. Homeowners should run water in unused sinks, tubs and drains to refill the P‑traps, which helps block any odors from entering living spaces. If an indoor odor is detected, opening windows and using fans to ventilate the area is recommended until the smell dissipates.

Questions or concerns about the project can be directed to the Spearfish Public Works Department at 605‑642‑1333. The department is ready to assist residents and ensure the work proceeds smoothly and safely.
This trenchless repair effort reflects the city’s commitment to modernizing essential infrastructure while preserving the quality of life for its citizens. By choosing a method that limits disruption, Spearfish demonstrates responsible stewardship of public resources and a focus on maintaining safe, reliable sewer services for the community.
