Madison, Wis. – The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) proudly reported that six of its schools have secured top positions in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings of Wisconsin public schools. The rankings, which evaluate schools on academic outcomes such as reading and math proficiency, college readiness and support for underserved students, underscore the district’s commitment to high‑quality education.
Elementary schools lead the way
Shorewood Hills Elementary earned the No. 6 spot out of 1,265 public elementary schools statewide, marking the highest placement for any Madison elementary. Van Hise Elementary followed at No. 26, while Randall Elementary rounded out the elementary trio at No. 95. These results reflect strong foundational instruction and consistent student achievement in core subjects.
Middle schools also excel
At the middle‑school level, Velma B. Hamilton Middle School ranked No. 19 among 840 Wisconsin public schools, and Georgia O’Keefe Middle School placed No. 91. Both schools demonstrated solid performance in reading and math, as well as progress in supporting students from diverse backgrounds.
High school recognized for college readiness
Madison West High School secured the No. 38 position out of 616 public high schools across the state. The high‑school ranking considered a broader set of criteria, including state assessment results, graduation rates, curriculum breadth and the performance of underserved students, all of which contributed to its strong showing.
District officials attribute success to educators and families
“These rankings reflect the commitment our educators bring to their work and the effort our students put into learning every day,” said Dr. Carlettra Stanford, MMSD assistant superintendent of schools and learning. “We’re proud to see our schools recognized for their academic performance, while remaining focused on creating learning environments where every student is challenged and prepared for what comes next.”
How the rankings are determined
U.S. News & World Report bases elementary and middle‑school rankings primarily on student performance in reading and mathematics assessments. High‑school rankings incorporate additional factors such as college readiness indicators, state assessment scores, graduation rates, curriculum breadth and the outcomes of underserved student groups.
What this means for Madison families
For parents and community members, the rankings provide a snapshot of how local schools compare statewide and highlight areas of strength within the district. The results can help families make informed decisions about educational options and reinforce confidence in the district’s academic direction.
Looking ahead
MMSD plans to continue investing in teacher development, curriculum enhancements and targeted support for students who need extra assistance. By maintaining a focus on rigorous instruction and a nurturing school climate, the district aims to sustain and improve its standing in future rankings.
