Sid Miller backs water‑protecting Democrat Clayton Tucker over Republican Nate Sheets in agriculture race

On the first day of early voting, outgoing Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller took to his website to warn voters about Republican challenger Nate Sheets and to lift up Democrat Clayton Tucker’s record on protecting Texas water and farmland.

Miller’s critique of Sheets

Miller wrote that Sheets lacks the qualifications needed to lead the agriculture department and has been weak on confronting powerful interests, especially data‑center developers. He described Sheets’s opposition as “weak,” his positions as “vague,” and his willingness to confront powerful interests as “seriously lacking.” Miller urged voters to “examine the candidates, question their qualifications, follow their money, and demand answers.”

Elevating Tucker without an endorsement

While Miller stopped short of a formal endorsement, he praised Tucker’s work on a moratorium on new data centers and his broader effort to protect Texas water, farmland and rural communities. “Democrat Clayton Tucker has taken strong positions defending our water, farmland, property rights, and rural communities against unchecked corporate expansion,” Miller said. He added that Texas does not need “another politician offering lip service while our water disappears and our farmland gets swallowed by corporate interests.”

Sheets fires back

Sheets responded on X, calling Miller “the most corrupt figure in Texas government” and framing Miller’s criticism as a “badge of honor.” He said his campaign aims to “shut down the criminality” at the department and accused Miller of trying to prevent him from uncovering past wrongdoing. Sheets also highlighted Miller’s hiring of former chief of staff Todd Smith, who pleaded guilty to commercial bribery for soliciting excessive fees from farmers seeking state hemp licenses.

What’s at stake

The race for agriculture commissioner has become a flashpoint over data‑center development, water conservation and the future of Texas’s rural economy. Miller and Tucker have called for an immediate moratorium on new data‑center projects, arguing that unchecked growth threatens water supplies and farmland. Sheets, on the other hand, has not joined that call, positioning himself as a more business‑friendly candidate.

Looking ahead

Although Miller has not officially endorsed any candidate, his public statements are likely to influence voters who respect his long‑standing role in Texas agriculture. As early voting continues, the contest between Sheets and Tucker will test how Texas voters weigh traditional agricultural values against the push for new technology‑driven development.

Both candidates remain active on the campaign trail, with Miller appearing alongside Tucker at anti‑data‑center events and Sheets continuing to promote his vision of a streamlined, pro‑business agriculture department.
