Seva Has Fed Midtown Vegetarians for Four Decades

Seva opened in Ann Arbor in 1973, which makes it older than most of Detroit’s craft beer scene, most of Detroit’s food media coverage, and, frankly, most of the people currently writing about both. The Detroit location, on West Canfield in Midtown, has been running since 1982. Forty-plus years of vegetarian cooking in a city that built itself on the assembly line — there’s something quietly stubborn about that.

The room is comfortable without being precious about it. Exposed brick, mismatched wooden chairs, a long bar along one wall. It fills up on weekday lunches with Wayne State faculty and hospital workers from nearby Detroit Medical Center, and on weekend evenings with a more mixed crowd that includes a fair number of people who don’t self-identify as vegetarians but keep coming back anyway. That last group is telling.

You arrive, you get seated without much fuss, and the menu is bigger than you expect. Not intimidatingly long, but broad enough that you’ll probably take a few minutes. They do a lot with Mexican-inflected dishes — enchiladas, tacos, a burrito that actually fills you up — alongside classic diner-adjacent plates that have been reengineered to work without meat. The Southwestern scramble at brunch is worth knowing about: eggs, peppers, black beans, house salsa, and a small mountain of home fries that come out properly browned, not steamed-gray like most brunch potatoes.

The nachos are a legitimate starter, layered rather than dumped. The black bean soup is deeply seasoned and shows up hot. The tempeh dishes are better than they have any right to be in a city where tempeh remains a concept many menus pay lip service to and then execute poorly. Seva actually knows what to do with it.

Beer and wine are available. The cocktail list is short but functional. Prices are reasonable by any standard — most entrees land between twelve and seventeen dollars, brunch plates often under fourteen. For Midtown Detroit, where a grain bowl at a trendier spot can run close to twenty without batting an eye, Seva’s pricing still feels like a minor act of conscience.

Parking on Canfield and the surrounding streets is manageable on weekday afternoons. Weekend evenings require more patience, but it’s Midtown, and you knew that going in. The restaurant closes on Mondays.

What distinguishes Seva from a certain type of earnest vegetarian institution is that it doesn’t lecture you. There’s no manifesto on the wall. The menu doesn’t use the word “journey.” Nobody will explain the sourcing of the lentils unless you ask. They’ve apparently decided that cooking the food well and putting it in front of you is sufficient, a philosophy that has kept them around while a rotating cast of more aggressively conceptual restaurants has opened, generated coverage, and closed.

It is not glamorous. It is not the place you’re going to read about in a national food magazine this year. But it was here before almost everything else on this block, and there’s a decent chance it’ll outlast whatever opens next door. Sometimes that’s the whole story.
