Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced Monday that the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway will receive over $3.1 million in additional federal funding. The money, provided through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure & Safety Improvements Program, will be used to upgrade the Main Line that runs from the City of Cortland to the Town of Virgil.
Why the investment matters for Central New York
Both senators emphasized the connection between modern rail infrastructure and the region’s growing manufacturing base. Schumer said, “With major new business and manufacturing projects like Micron underway in Central New York, it is more important than ever that the region is connected and has modern infrastructure.” Gillibrand added that the $3.1 million investment from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will “modernize the rail system between Cortland and Virgil just in time for new corporations like Micron coming to the area.”
The funding will allow NYS&W to remove existing slow zones, reduce ongoing maintenance costs, and increase railcar capacity to 286,000 pounds. The railroad plans to install continuous welded rail, replace ties, and renew ballast along roughly 4.5 miles of track. These improvements are expected to enhance the movement of feed ingredients, lumber, building materials, chemicals, and aggregates throughout the state.
Local impact and future prospects
For Cortland residents and businesses, the upgraded rail line promises faster, more reliable freight service, which can lower shipping costs and attract additional investment. The project aligns with broader state and federal efforts to strengthen transportation corridors that support job creation and economic growth.
While the funding announcement highlights federal commitment, local officials have not yet detailed any complementary municipal actions. However, the expectation is that the improved rail capacity will complement ongoing development initiatives and help sustain the momentum generated by large‑scale projects such as Micron’s semiconductor facility.
What’s next
The New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway will begin work on the upgrades later this year, pending final project planning and contractor selection. Stakeholders, including local chambers of commerce and community leaders, are encouraged to monitor progress and provide input on how the enhanced rail service can best serve the region’s economic goals.
