Sean “Diddy” Combs transferred to federal prison in Pennsylvania

The Federal Bureau of Prisons announced that music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs has been transferred from the Federal Correctional Institution at Fort Dix, New Jersey, to the Federal Correctional Institution Allenwood Low in Pennsylvania. The move was confirmed by a bureau spokesperson, who declined to discuss the specific reasons for the transfer, citing privacy, safety, and security concerns.

Background on the Fort Dix stay

Combs began serving his 50‑month sentence at Fort Dix in October after being convicted of transporting individuals across state lines for sexual encounters. Earlier reporting indicated that he had access to contraband items, including cellphones, liquor, and other prohibited goods, while at Fort Dix. Four former inmates who shared a housing unit with Combs described a pattern of him paying other prisoners to perform services such as cooking, cleaning, making his bed, and providing Chinese‑style massages.

One source, speaking anonymously, said, “This is not some normal s— you see in jail. This is some rich s—… It looks crazy, but again, it’s Diddy.” The source’s comments were accompanied by photos and video footage reviewed by NBC News that appeared to show Combs using a contraband phone.

Possible reasons for the transfer

Experts note that federal prisons often move inmates to special‑housing units when they become subjects of investigations. Retired Bureau of Prisons special investigator Vito Maraviglia, who worked at Fort Dix in the 1990s, explained that inmates under investigation may be placed in the Special Housing Unit (SHU) while evidence is gathered. Maraviglia described Fort Dix as one of the “cushiest” federal facilities, with segmented housing that can be harder to monitor, potentially facilitating contraband use.

Maraviglia added, “A high‑profile guy like that, with all that money, I’m surprised they put him at a place like Fort Dix.” The SHU typically confines two inmates together for at least 23 hours a day, allowing only limited personal items such as a book or a wind‑up radio, and restricting commissary access.

Legal context and ongoing allegations

Combs’ case also involves civil litigation. Attorney Gloria Allred, representing a woman who alleges that Combs raped her more than 20 years ago, called for a federal investigation into the alleged cellphone use, stating that “these serious allegations … cry out for an immediate federal investigation and appropriate federal action.” Combs has denied the allegations, and the lawsuit remains pending.

His criminal trial last year resulted in a split verdict: a New York jury acquitted him of the most serious sex‑trafficking and racketeering charges, while other lesser charges remained. The case highlighted alleged drug‑fueled “freak offs” that involved male sex workers and former girlfriends, including singer Cassie, who previously sued Combs for alleged abuse.

What the transfer means

While the bureau has not disclosed the specific motivations for moving Combs, the transfer to Allenwood Low—a low‑security facility in Pennsylvania—suggests a response to the ongoing investigations and concerns about contraband. The move underscores the challenges federal authorities face in managing high‑profile inmates and maintaining prison security.

Further details are likely to emerge as investigations continue, but for now the bureau’s statement remains limited to confirming the relocation.
