Schlagl’s Cheese & More Is the Kind of Shop You Drive Across the State to Find

Saturday mornings in Appleton have a rhythm all their own, and once you’ve spent one of them at the Downtown Appleton Farmers Market, you’ll understand why locals guard this weekly ritual the way they guard a good pie recipe. Running from May through early November, the market sprawls along College Avenue and the surrounding streets right in the heart of downtown, turning the city’s main corridor into something that feels genuinely alive — fragrant, loud in the best way, and brimming with color from the first vendor stall to the last.

I showed up on a bright September morning with nothing but a canvas tote bag and an empty stomach, and two hours later I had managed to fill both beyond reasonable capacity. The market draws well over a hundred vendors on peak weekends, and the range of what’s on offer is almost disorienting at first. You’ve got your classic produce tables stacked with heirloom tomatoes in shades you didn’t know tomatoes came in. You’ve got fresh-cut flower bouquets that cost less than a bouquet from any grocery store and look twice as good. You’ve got local honey, handmade jams, fresh-baked sourdough loaves with that perfect crackle when you press the crust.

But here’s what separates the Downtown Appleton Farmers Market from a dozen other regional markets: the food vendors make it worth the trip all on their own. I started with a warm breakfast burrito from one of the prepared food stands — eggs, roasted peppers, and local cheddar wrapped tight and handed over with a smile. Then I wandered my way into a sample of sheep’s milk cheese that I still think about, offered by a small farmstead operation from just outside the Fox Valley. One bite and I bought a quarter pound without even asking the price first.

The market has a communal energy that’s hard to manufacture and impossible to fake. Dogs on leashes weave between strollers. Old friends run into each other between the herb tables and linger way too long catching up. Kids drag parents toward the kettle corn stand with the kind of focused determination you rarely see applied to anything else. It’s one of those places where Appleton reveals its actual personality — unpretentious, neighborly, and quietly proud of what it grows and makes.

College Avenue provides a stunning backdrop. The historic storefronts and wide sidewalks were practically built for this kind of gathering, and in the fall especially, when the trees along the avenue start turning and the squash and gourds pile up on the tables in deep oranges and greens, the whole scene looks like something a tourism board would spend real money trying to recreate.

If you’re visiting Appleton on a Saturday between May and November, this market is not optional. Get there by nine if you want first pick of the good stuff — the serious bread bakers and the best berry vendors tend to sell out well before noon. Bring cash, bring a bag, and for the love of everything good, bring an appetite. You’re going to need it.
