AUGUSTA, Ga. — Scottie Scheffler arrives at Augusta feeling refreshed, Bryson DeChambeau is carrying confidence from recent wins, and defending champion Rory McIlroy says he finally feels free of the long-standing pressure that accompanied his chase for golf’s career grand slam. The 90th edition of the Masters begins Thursday with early tee times and the familiar spring backdrop of azaleas and dogwoods at Augusta National.
McIlroy has been able to relax more than in past visits, spending time this week with family and reflecting on last year’s dramatic playoff triumph that completed his career grand slam. While he wants to contend again, he also knows how rare repeat victories are at the Masters — only three players have successfully defended the title — so he’s trying to balance enjoyment of the champion’s perks with a focused competitive mindset.
Scheffler, the world No. 1, comes in as one of the favorites and is chasing a third green jacket after wins in 2022 and 2024. Despite a stretch without a top-10 finish in his most recent starts, his earlier season form — including multiple top-five results and a tour victory that pushed him past 20 PGA Tour wins before turning 30 — keeps him near the top of betting boards. Off the course, he and his wife recently welcomed their second son, and Scheffler says the extra rest has helped him prepare.
DeChambeau enters Augusta on a hot streak, having won his last two events on the LIV circuit. He has yet to capture a Masters title; a year ago he tied for the 54‑hole lead with McIlroy but struggled down the stretch and settled for a top-five finish. That experience remains a motivator for him as he tries to convert current form into success at Augusta.
Course conditions figure to be important: a forecast for sunny, low-humidity weather should make Augusta National firm and fast, putting an emphasis on players who can manage the greens. Notably absent this year are two major figures of the game. Tiger Woods recently pleaded not guilty to DUI charges following a rollover crash and has issued a statement that he is seeking treatment. Phil Mickelson is also not playing as his family navigates a personal health matter.
