Savannah Mayor Van Johnson said the election of Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms as Georgia’s governor will directly benefit the Coastal Empire, noting her long‑standing ties to Savannah and her readiness to address the region’s unique challenges.
According to WTOC, Bottoms secured the governorship with roughly a 9% lead over Republican Rick Jackson, becoming the first Black woman to hold the office in the United States. Johnson, a personal friend of Bottoms, attributed her victory to her qualifications and her opposition to the current federal administration, saying, “I think people were ready to try something different… she was qualified and will work across party lines.” He also highlighted that a Democrat has not held the governor’s seat in the 21st century.
Bottoms told WTOC on Election Day that she never raised property taxes while providing large raises for law enforcement. Both she and Johnson agreed that Bottoms’ tenure as Atlanta mayor was a major factor in her win. Johnson added that the groundwork laid by former gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams helped break the glass ceiling for Bottoms.
Johnson emphasized Bottoms’ familiarity with Savannah, stating, “She’s very familiar with Savannah, she’s spent a lot of time in Savannah… she understands the issues that Savannah and coastal Georgia faces, and she recognizes the state is not just metro Atlanta.” He expects her administration to give the city “due attention and concerns specific to our concerns here that we deserve.”
Local news also reported several Savannah‑focused developments. The Savannah Police Department announced that a juvenile is facing weapons charges after a Tuesday afternoon shooting on Pennsylvania Avenue injured a man, and multiple firearms were seized.
Friends of Disabled Adults and Children (FODAC) continues to provide home medical equipment at no cost through its Savannah branch, CEO Chris Brand said, underscoring community support for vulnerable residents.
On the cultural side, Driftaway Café will host a visit from “America’s Best Restaurants,” a national media and marketing company, for an on‑site shoot as part of the ABR Roadshow on Nov. 18, offering local exposure for the eatery.
Nearby Effingham County commissioners postponed a vote on the site plan for OpenAI’s proposed AI data center until Nov. 17 after heated debate over earthen berms and wetland impacts, a decision that could affect regional development.
What’s next: Governor‑elect Bottoms will begin her term in January. Savannah residents can look forward to the Driftaway Café ABR Roadshow on Nov. 18, and the Savannah Police Department will provide updates on the Pennsylvania Avenue shooting investigation while FODAC continues its free equipment program.
