Close to home. Always in the loop.

Saturday Night at Dakota Jazz Club Belongs to Someone Else Now

Sunday morning, around ten o’clock, the Stone Arch Bridge crowd hasn’t gathered yet. You cross into Northeast Minneapolis and follow Main Street until the sidewalk opens up near the river, and there it is — Aster Cafe, a converted 1890s Victorian house sitting at the edge of the Mississippi, with a patio that looks like it was designed specifically for mornings when you have nowhere to be.

The building alone is worth the trip. Three stories of weathered brick and old wood, with a wraparound porch and a garden patio strung with lights that somehow still look good in daylight. It doesn’t try to be anything it isn’t. Inside, the rooms are small and a little crooked, with mismatched furniture and local art on the walls — not curated-local-art-wall art, but actual stuff from actual people you might know. It feels like someone’s house, which it basically was, once.

Order at the counter and find a seat wherever you like. On a slow Sunday you’ll get one of the patio tables overlooking the river without any trouble. The menu is the kind of thing you actually want to eat: avocado toast that earns its place on the menu, a breakfast sandwich on house-made focaccia, granola bowls that don’t feel punitive. They do a solid egg scramble with market vegetables that changes by season. Coffee is from a local roaster and consistently good — not a statement, just reliably what you want it to be.

The lunch menu leans into sandwiches and salads, with a rotating soup that tends to be better than it needs to be. Prices are reasonable for what you get — breakfast runs eight to thirteen dollars, lunch maybe ten to fifteen. It’s not cheap, but it’s not charging you for the zip code either.

What makes Aster work is the rhythm of the place. It doesn’t rush you. On a weekday afternoon it fills with people on laptops and people on dates who probably met on apps and small groups splitting a bottle of wine at two in the afternoon because why not. On weekends the patio is where you want to be, full stop — especially in late spring or early fall, when the river light does something specific that’s hard to describe and easy to remember.

They host live music on weekend evenings, mostly acoustic and jazz, low-key enough that you can still have a conversation. It’s not a music venue with food; it’s a cafe that happens to have music, and that distinction matters. The crowd skews local — not exclusively Northeast, but people who know the neighborhood well enough to have walked here.

Parking on Main Street can get tight on summer weekends, but there’s usually something within a couple of blocks. If you’re coming from downtown, the Stone Arch Bridge walk is about fifteen minutes and arguably the better arrival anyway. You come across the bridge, you see the river, you turn left, and Aster is right there waiting.

Some places make sense in every season. Aster Cafe is one of them — the patio in August, a window seat in February, the porch on an October morning when the leaves are doing what they do along the river. It holds up.
