Saratoga Springs, NY – District Attorney Brett Eby announced that Olivia Neri, a local college student, is making steady progress in her recovery after a brutal assault by her co‑worker, David Cruz Torres, and a subsequent vehicle crash.
Attack and crash details
According to police reports, Torres slashed Neri’s throat while she was giving him a ride home on the evening of October 9. The assault severed her left carotid artery and damaged a portion of her trachea. In an effort to seek help, Neri leapt from the moving vehicle, causing the car to collide with Augie’s To‑Go on Lake Avenue just before 8:15 p.m.
Medical response
First responders from the Saratoga Springs Police and Fire Departments arrived promptly, transporting Neri to a nearby hospital before airlifting her to Albany Med for advanced care. The DA’s office confirmed she remains in recovery, supported by her mother and family.
Legal action
Torres, 36, was apprehended after attempting to flee the scene. He now faces charges of second‑degree attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon. A court appearance is scheduled for tomorrow morning in Saratoga Springs City Court.
Community support
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with Neri’s medical expenses and ongoing care. Friends and family emphasize the impact of the attack on her health, education, and ability to work.
DA’s statement
“While the victim faces a long road to recovery, I am pleased to share that she is recovering well, with the support of her loving mother, following this brutal attack,” DA Brett Eby said. “Her remarkable strength and true heroism throughout this ordeal are nothing short of inspiring.”
