Santa Barbara shoppers get creative with Halloween costumes as prices rise

Halloween in Santa Barbara this year is prompting shoppers to stretch their dollars while still embracing the fun of the season. As costume and decoration prices climb, families and individuals are finding inventive ways to celebrate without breaking the bank.

Local stores adapt to tighter budgets

World of Magic, a longtime costume retailer in downtown Santa Barbara, reports a mix of classic characters, pop‑culture favorites and nostalgic looks on its shelves. Owner Tradyn Foley says the store is offering a range of price points to accommodate shoppers facing higher costs. “We have price points for everybody. In total, I think the spending is a little lower this year. A lot of things have been more expensive,” Foley explained.

Y2K‑inspired outfits are trending, with customers gravitating toward costumes reminiscent of Michael Jackson and Dolly Parton, as well as beloved movie characters from Toy Story, Shrek and Coraline. Yet many shoppers note that price tags can add up quickly.

Shoppers share cost‑saving strategies

“Everything’s marked up. I looked at a costume I wanted and it was $84. I asked myself, do I have this in my closet?” said Santa Barbara resident Vivian Storm, who is considering a DIY approach.

Others are digging through closets for hidden treasures. Gabrielle Chiarello, visiting from San Francisco, said she “frantically looked in our closet to see what we have and made some clown hats.”

Sophie Ward, a local resident planning to dress as Frodo from The Lord of the Rings, is piecing together her outfit from items she already owns, adding only affordable accessories. When asked about the cost of a single piece, she replied, “$15.”

National spending outlook

According to the National Retail Federation, Americans are expected to spend a record $13.5 billion on Halloween this year, with the average consumer budgeting about $115 for costumes, candy and decorations. While the national figure suggests robust spending, Santa Barbara shoppers are consciously moderating their outlays.

Businesses use Halloween to build community

Local enterprises see the holiday as an opportunity to connect with customers and staff. At American Riviera Bank, employees dress up for Halloween, creating a friendly atmosphere that encourages conversation. “It keeps our customers and it brings more people over to us. They talk about us. I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, you guys dressed up for Halloween?’” said bank representative Adriana Corona.

These efforts reflect a broader trend of small businesses leveraging seasonal events to strengthen neighborhood ties, a practice that aligns with Santa Barbara’s emphasis on community and family values.

Tips for a budget‑friendly Halloween

  • Search your own closet for clothing items that can be repurposed.
  • Visit thrift stores or second‑hand shops for affordable accessories.
  • Consider DIY decorations using recycled materials.
  • Shop sales early in the season to lock in lower prices.

Whether purchasing a ready‑made costume or crafting one at home, Santa Barbara residents are proving that creativity and thrift can go hand in hand during Halloween.
