Sanford NICU Brings Halloween Joy to Preterm Babies and Their Families in Fargo

FARGO, N.D. – On Friday, Oct. 30, the Sanford Health Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) turned its hallway into a small celebration of Halloween, dressing three of the unit’s tiniest patients in gentle, felt‑covered costumes. The effort gave families a chance to share a beloved holiday tradition even as they faced the uncertainty of caring for infants born at or before 26 weeks gestation.

Costumes that respect medical needs

Each costume was designed to sit lightly over the babies, allowing nurses to maintain the critical medical equipment and monitoring devices each infant requires. One infant was transformed into a beloved “very hungry caterpillar,” another into a cuddly bear, and a third became a classic cowboy – a nod to the mother who hand‑sewed a Woody outfit, saying it gave her little sheriff a “friend in me.”

Family‑centered care at the heart of the NICU

Sanford NICU family wellness clinician Michaela Moffett explained that honoring family rituals is a core part of the unit’s mission. “We work really hard here at Sanford to take care of the infant and their family, and part of that means also honoring their normal rituals and traditions. Helping them celebrate things that are important to them can also be healing during their hospitalization,” she said.

Beyond costumes, nurses crafted scrapbook pages and name banners, turning sterile hospital rooms into spaces that feel a little more like home. These small touches aim to support parental bonding and give families tangible memories of their child’s first holiday.

Why early celebrations matter

For parents of pre‑term infants, the NICU can feel like a world apart from everyday life. Celebrating milestones—whether a first smile, a first breath without assistance, or a first Halloween—helps anchor families in familiar traditions and reinforces the hope that drives them through long weeks of care.

“Seeing my baby in a costume reminded me that even in this tough time, we can still find joy and normalcy,” said one mother who participated in the event. “It gave us something beautiful to hold onto and share with friends and family.”

Community support and future plans

The NICU’s holiday initiative was made possible through donations of felt, fabric, and volunteer time from local community members and businesses. Sanford Health plans to continue similar family‑focused activities throughout the year, recognizing that emotional well‑being is a vital component of infant recovery.

As the NICU staff look ahead, they remain committed to blending cutting‑edge medical care with compassionate, family‑centered practices that reflect the values of faith, family, and individual liberty cherished by the Fargo community.
