Most people in Rockwall drive past the recreation center on Smirl Drive without giving it much thought. Here’s what stopped me: the facility has an indoor lap pool, a leisure pool, and a waterslide — all under one roof — and a day pass for adults runs about seven dollars. For a city this size, that’s quietly remarkable.
The Rockwall Recreation Center sits on the Harry Myers Park campus on the east side of town, a few minutes off I-30. The building isn’t flashy from the outside, but once you’re through the doors, it’s genuinely well-maintained — clean locker rooms, staff who actually say hello, and enough equipment that you’re rarely waiting. The facility includes a full fitness floor with cardio machines and free weights, group fitness studios, a gymnasium, and that indoor aquatics area that most people outside Rockwall don’t even know exists.
I started going regularly this past winter mostly for the pool. The lap lanes are real — 25 yards, six lanes, consistent scheduling for open swim. If you’re used to crowded rec center pools in the Dallas suburbs, this one is refreshingly uncrowded on weekday mornings. I’ve shown up at 7 a.m. and had a lane to myself more than once. The leisure pool and the slide are obviously more of a family draw, and weekend afternoons get busier, but the lap area stays manageable.
The fitness floor is solid without being exceptional. You won’t find the boutique-gym experience here, and that’s fine — that’s not what it’s for. What it does offer is a respectable selection of cardio equipment, free weights up to 100 pounds, cable machines, and a separate stretching area. Group fitness classes run throughout the week; I’ve seen the schedule include cycling, yoga, and Zumba, and the rooms fill up for popular slots so it’s worth checking the city’s online calendar before you go.
Pricing is one of the better arguments for this place. A daily adult pass is around $7, seniors pay less, and youth rates are lower still. If you live in Rockwall, an annual membership for a single adult runs in the neighborhood of $300 — less than most month-to-month gym memberships in the area. Rockwall residents do get a small discount over non-residents, so bring ID if you live in the city limits.
The park campus around the facility is worth mentioning too. Harry Myers Park has soccer fields, tennis courts, a disc golf course, and a decent trail loop that’s good for a cool-down walk after a workout. In the spring and fall especially, it’s a pleasant stretch of green that doesn’t feel overrun the way some of the lakefront spots do on weekends.
A few practical notes: the pool schedule shifts seasonally and occasionally for swim meets, so check the city of Rockwall’s parks and recreation page before you make the drive specifically for lap swimming. Parking is free and usually easy to find. The rec center hours run early to late most days — I’ve been in by 5:30 a.m. on weekday mornings without issue.
For what it charges, this place does a lot. It’s not a luxury gym and it doesn’t try to be — but for a reliable, affordable, genuinely usable fitness facility with an indoor pool in a mid-sized suburb, Rockwall got this one right.
