Rockledge Park’s Quieter Cousin Delivers at Easthill

Around seven on a Tuesday morning, I pulled into Easthill Park off Turbeville Road and had the whole fishing pier to myself. The water was low and greenish, the kind of color Lewisville Lake turns in late summer, and a great blue heron was standing completely still maybe forty feet out, doing what herons do. I sat on the edge of the wooden pier and ate a breakfast taco I’d brought from home and thought: more people really should know about this place.

Easthill Park sits on the eastern shore of Lewisville Lake, operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and it’s the kind of spot that rewards people who actually look at a map instead of just following the crowds to the more famous access points. It’s compact — a few dozen acres — but the layout is smart. You get a boat launch, a picnic area with covered shelters, restrooms, a small sandy stretch where kids wade in calm weather, and that fishing pier that juts out far enough to matter.

The pier is probably the main draw for me. It’s free to walk out on with a valid Corps day-use pass (the standard $5 per vehicle fee applies, though an America the Beautiful annual pass covers it). Bring your own rod and you’re in business. Catfish, crappie, largemouth bass — the lake holds all of them, and the pier puts you in decent water without requiring a boat. I’ve seen older guys out there with lawn chairs and coolers at dawn who clearly have this dialed in as a weekly ritual. Good for them. That’s the right way to do a park like this.

The picnic shelters can be reserved through Recreation.gov, same as most Corps facilities, and they’re legitimately useful — shaded, with grills, reasonably spaced so you’re not eating potato salad directly next to strangers. In spring, when the redbuds along the perimeter start blooming and the lake is still cool, it’s one of the better spots in the DFW area to spend a Saturday afternoon without spending much money.

Swimmers should know the lake bottom drops off unevenly, and the Corps doesn’t post lifeguards, so swimming is at your own risk — standard for any Corps lake park in Texas. The wading area near the launch is gentle enough for young kids, but you’re watching them yourself.

What I appreciate most, honestly, is that Easthill stays manageable. It doesn’t attract the volume that some of the bigger day-use areas do on holiday weekends, partly because it’s a little harder to find and there’s no beach volleyball setup or elaborate playground to bring the full-family-chaos crowd. That’s not a knock — it just means the people who show up are mostly there to fish, eat lunch, or watch the lake do its thing for a couple of hours.

If you’re coming from central Lewisville, it’s maybe fifteen minutes east on Highway 121 and then a short jog north. Park hours are typically sunrise to sunset, and the entry road is easy to miss if you’re moving fast — the signage is Corps-standard, which is to say modest. Slow down when you see the turnoff for Turbeville Road and you’ll find it.

Bring sunscreen, a chair, and something to read. The heron will probably be there. He’s usually there.
