Robson Ranch resident and Denton County golf legend Ray Hibler, 95, was honored with the ceremonial first drive at the newly renovated Wildhorse South Course on Oct. 16. The event marked the grand reopening of the 27‑hole facility after more than $4 million in upgrades.
Hibler’s lifelong love of the game
Born on July 4, 1931, Hibler grew up playing baseball and basketball before serving in the Army. After his military service he tried teaching, coaching, and working for clothing manufacturers. It wasn’t until around 1977 that he discovered his true passion for golf.
Over the decades Hibler amassed an impressive résumé: multiple tournament victories, a World Senior Golf Championship title, years of organizing events, rating courses for Golf Digest, and a stint with Nike Golf. His dedication to the sport has made him a beloved figure among Robson Ranch neighbors.
First drive and a remarkable round
During the reopening ceremony, Hibler said, “Golf has been fabulous to me. Having the honor to take the first drive on the new course was an incredibly special experience.” The South Course, which he knows intimately, has long been a gathering place for local golfers.
In 2019 Hibler shot a round of 71 on Wildhorse – 17 strokes below his age of 88 and one under par – a performance that still inspires younger players.
Renovation details
Robson Ranch Denton Homeowners Association General Manager Rhett Hubbard explained that the $4 million renovation includes new turf designed to improve course conditions, playability, and overall experience. The upgrades allow golfers to enjoy all 27 holes again, though a cart‑path‑only restriction remains while the new grass establishes.
“We are excited to welcome golfers back to the South Course. This has been a significant investment in the future of Wildhorse Golf,” Hubbard said. “We appreciate the patience of our golfers throughout the renovation and, as we reopen, their cooperation with the cart‑path‑only requirement. Protecting the new turf now will help ensure that everyone can enjoy the benefits of this renovation for many years.”
Community impact
Hibler noted that while Wildhorse may not rival world‑renowned courses such as Pine Valley or Cypress Ridge, it is perfect for the community it serves. The course provides a family‑friendly environment where residents of all ages can practice, compete, and socialize.
The reopening underscores Robson Ranch’s commitment to preserving local recreation and fostering intergenerational connections. As Hibler watches younger golfers drive, chip, and putt from his home, he remains a living testament to the enduring value of sport, tradition, and community.
Looking ahead
With the South Course fully operational, Robson Ranch anticipates increased participation in local tournaments and casual play. The renovation is expected to attract visitors from across Denton County, supporting the area’s reputation as a premier golf destination.
For residents and guests alike, the revitalized Wildhorse course offers a fresh start, a nod to the past, and a promise of many more rounds to come.
