Robert Griffin III Says He Would Accept Baylor Head Coaching Job

Former Baylor Bears quarterback Robert Griffin III, the school’s only Heisman Trophy winner, said on the Dan Patrick Show that he would “100%” accept the university’s vacant head football‑coach job if offered the opportunity. Griffin highlighted his personal connection to Baylor’s recent successes and his belief that the program needs leaders who understand what it takes to win there.

Griffin’s Vision for Baylor Football

Griffin, who led the Bears to a 10‑3 record and an Alamo Bowl victory during his Heisman‑winning 2011 season, said, “If Baylor wants to get back to winning and have a university that isn’t just respectable on the football field, but one the fans can be proud of, they need people who know what it looks like to win at Baylor.” He added that he has spoken with athletic director Doug McNamee, describing McNamee as someone who “knows how you have to win at Baylor and recruit to Baylor to make those things happen.”

Coaching Background and Current Search

While Griffin has never served as a head coach at any level, his football résumé includes a four‑year playing stint at Baylor, a No. 2 overall selection by the Washington Redskins in the 2012 NFL Draft, and a post‑playing career in sports media with ESPN and FOX. The Bears are currently conducting an extensive search to replace former head coach Dave Aranda, who was dismissed after a 4‑3 start to the season and recent losses to TCU and Kansas.

Aranda, hired in 2020 after serving as LSU’s defensive coordinator, guided Baylor to a 12‑2 season in 2021, the most wins in school history. However, the program has struggled to maintain that momentum, prompting the university to name defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman as interim head coach while the search continues.

Why Griffin’s Interest Matters

Griffin’s statement resonates with many Baylor supporters who remember the excitement of the 2011 campaign. His familiarity with the university’s culture, combined with his high profile in national sports media, could attract attention and recruiting interest if he were to assume the role. Although he lacks coaching experience, Griffin’s willingness to step into the position underscores a broader trend of former players transitioning into leadership roles within college athletics.

Local fans and alumni have expressed optimism that Griffin’s deep ties to the program could help restore pride and competitiveness. “Having someone who’s lived the Baylor experience and knows what it takes to win here is exactly what we need,” one longtime supporter said.

Next Steps

The athletic department has not confirmed whether Griffin is an official candidate, but his public declaration adds a notable name to the pool of potential hires. The university is expected to interview several candidates in the coming weeks before making a final decision.

Regardless of the outcome, Griffin’s enthusiasm highlights the importance of alumni involvement and community support in shaping the future of Baylor football.
