In a conversation on The Zach Rateliff Show, Executive Vice President Eric Voyles and CEO Scott Norton elaborated on their mission to mitigate the economic impact of past military base closures. “When we’re at war, it’s good around here,” Norton noted, highlighting the region’s historical dependency on defense budgets.

The TexAmericas Center acquired 12,000 acres, previously part of military installations, to repurpose them for industrial use. This move is a direct response to the economic void left by the downsizing of local military operations in the 1990s and early 2000s. The center’s goal is to create a resilient local economy that doesn’t rely solely on military spending.

Addressing Environmental Challenges

The land, once used for ordnance manufacturing, required significant remediation to be deemed safe for commercial use. “The actual process of producing that created some environmental problems on the property,” Voyles explained.

Through diligent coordination with the EPA and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, TexAmericas Center has successfully cleaned up vast portions of the land. Of the 12,000 acres, only 260 remain under environmental restrictions, showcasing the center’s commitment to making the land viable for new industries.

Managed by a local board of directors, the center ensures that decisions are made with direct input from those who live and work in the region.
