Republicans lose ground in rural Texas as Democratic vote share rises

LUFKIN, Texas – The latest vote totals from Tuesday’s 2026 midterm elections reveal that Texas Republicans slipped in several of the state’s most dependable rural counties, while Democratic candidates made measurable gains.

Turnout and vote share shifts

According to a Texas Tribune analysis, roughly 90% of the counties that experienced a drop in voter turnout were rural. Rural turnout rose by only about 1.4 percentage points since 2022, compared with an 8‑point increase in urban areas.

State Rep. James Talarico, who became the first Democrat to win a U.S. Senate seat from Texas since 1988, narrowed the Republican margin in rural counties by about ten percentage points relative to 2018. In exurban counties, his performance exceeded Beto O’Rourke’s 2018 margin by roughly fifteen points.

Local reactions

Political science professor Drew Landry of South Plains College said the results should serve as a warning to the GOP. “You can’t take rural Texas for granted,” Landry said. “Republicans tried many tactics to boost support, but they avoided the big‑ticket issues that matter to voters.”

Former Lufkin City Council member Guessippina Bonner echoed the sentiment, noting that many of her Republican friends stayed home because they felt the party’s messaging did not address their concerns.

Democratic gains in statewide races

Democrats also outperformed in other statewide contests. Clayton Tucker is set to become the first Democratic agriculture commissioner since 1990, and he formed a quasi‑alliance with outgoing Commissioner Sid Miller, who lost the Republican primary earlier this year.

While Democrats remain far from winning the rural vote outright, the inroads they made this cycle propelled them to the top of the statewide results.

Impact on the Republican base

Conservative political analyst Suzanne Bellsnyder, who worked on Gina Hinojosa’s gubernatorial campaign, said the GOP “lost because they didn’t give rural Texas enough of a reason to show up.” She likened the loss to an “insurance policy” that failed to protect the party’s rural base.

In Lubbock County, a historically solid Republican stronghold, Talarico captured nearly 41% of the vote, compared with O’Rourke’s 35% in his 2018 Senate bid. The last Democrat to reach 40% in Lubbock was Ann Richards in 1990.

Issues driving voter decisions

Landry identified public‑education funding, data‑center development, and high grocery and gas prices as top concerns for rural voters. He argued that Republicans focused heavily on social issues such as transgender‑rights legislation, which did not resonate with the electorate.

Former state Rep. Sid Miller placed blame on Governor Greg Abbott, citing the governor’s private‑school voucher program as unpopular in rural areas. Miller said, “Rural Texas didn’t have anybody to vote for tonight. They felt betrayed.”

Conversely, Democrats emphasized affordability, public‑school support, and data‑center investment, messages that appeared to connect with voters, according to Bellsnyder.

Looking ahead

Landry cautioned that Democrats must continue to earn votes and build on this momentum, noting that the next election cycle in 2028 will test whether these gains can be solidified.

Overall, rural Texas accounted for about 8% of the total votes cast in 2026, down from roughly 9% in 2022, with an estimated 800,000 rural voters participating compared with 1.3 million voters in Harris County alone.
