In Republic, Missouri, Cub Scout Pack 74 demonstrated the spirit of service when a young scout rallied to help a fellow member reach a crucial fundraising milestone. Charlie, a member of the pack, was on the brink of selling enough popcorn to earn a free camp slot for the next summer when he was sidelined by appendicitis and required surgery.
“He had appendicitis, so he couldn’t work his storefront,” explained Kasey Bean, another Pack 74 scout. Recognizing the importance of the goal, Kasey took it upon himself to sell the remaining bags of popcorn on Charlie’s behalf.
“I helped him get to it. He was pretty close. So I just did that last little stretch for him,” Kasey said. “I just wanted to, you know, just help him get to it because the Scout is kind.”
Family Support and Community Values
Kasey’s mother, Sherry Bean, highlighted the broader lesson the experience offers. “One of the points of the Scout Law is to be helpful, and I think Kasey felt like it was the right thing to do to help Charlie,” she said. Sherry added that Kasey’s own experience with the same surgery a year earlier gave him empathy for his friend.
Beyond the popcorn sale, Sherry noted Kasey’s habit of looking for ways to serve the community, from assisting firefighters and veterinarians to helping a local shopper with groceries. “He saw a gentleman named Ben helping a lady with her electric cart. He loaded her groceries. He helped her get into the car,” she recounted. “Kasey turned to me and said, ‘Mom, Ben just did a really nice thing for that lady. I really want to take some popcorn to him.’”
Final Push for the Goal
Kasey now aims to reach 5,000 popcorn sales, hoping his effort will inspire kindness throughout Republic. His final sales event is scheduled for Friday, October 30, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Republic Price Cutter.
“Be nice to people, even if they’re strangers, and just do good,” Kasey urged. “Do a good turn daily.”
Sherry Bean expressed pride in her son’s dedication, noting that the experience reflects the values parents and the scouting program strive to instill: service, compassion, and community responsibility.
