Renton, Wash. – The Renton School District announced on Oct. 21 that it has discharged Rashaad Powell, the head coach of the Renton High School boys basketball team and an assistant principal, after a lengthy investigation into his conduct.
Investigation and findings
Powell was placed on administrative leave in April 2026 after the district opened an inquiry into text messages exchanged between him and the mothers of two Renton students. The investigation, obtained by the Renton Reporter through a public‑records request, described the messages as sexual in nature and noted that Powell changed his account of the incidents multiple times. While Powell denies the messages were unwanted and asserts he violated no district policy, the investigation identified four possible violations.
Discharge decision
During the Oct. 21 Renton School Board meeting, the board confirmed the discharge. The district’s hearing officer, after a hearing held Oct. 6‑8, determined there was sufficient cause to terminate Powell’s employment, according to spokesperson Randy Matheson. Matheson said Powell may appeal the decision under Washington state law (RCW 28A.405.320), which grants a certificated employee one initial statutory appeal to the county superior court.
Powell’s response
Powell posted a lengthy statement on Facebook, claiming the investigation was biased and lacked evidence. He described the situation as a “miscarriage of justice” and said he would continue to appeal. He also expressed personal disappointment and concern for his family’s reputation.
Background
Powell is a longtime figure at Renton High. A standout player at the school, he played professionally in Europe before returning to serve as an assistant under former coach Rick Comer. He became head coach in 2018 and was appointed assistant principal in 2023.
Next steps
The district has not been notified whether Powell will pursue an appeal to the King County Superior Court. The Reporter reached out to Powell’s attorney, Tyler Firkins, for comment but has not received a response.
