On the evening of Thursday, Nov. 5, Renton Police were dispatched to the Albertsons parking lot on NE Sunset Boulevard (4600 block) to assist the Renton Regional Fire Authority with an unconscious person in a vehicle. While officers were on scene, a gunshot was heard.
Firefighter wounded, suspect killed
A firefighter who was present at the scene was struck by a bullet. Police immediately returned fire, and the suspect was killed. Paramedics transported the injured firefighter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where hospital officials later confirmed the patient is in satisfactory condition.
Investigation handed to regional team
Because the incident involves law‑enforcement officers, the investigation has been transferred to the Valley Independent Investigative Team (VIIT). The multi‑agency team includes investigators from eight jurisdictions: Auburn, Des Moines, Federal Way, Kent, King County Sheriff’s Office, Renton, Port of Seattle and Tukwila. With Renton Police as the involved agency, its own staff is excluded from the investigation, and Auburn Police have taken the lead.
Details remain limited
Renton Police have not released further specifics about the shooting. The Reporter has reached out to Auburn Police for additional information but has not yet received a response.
Community response
Local officials and community members expressed concern for the firefighter’s health and gratitude for the swift actions of first responders. The incident underscores the risks faced by public‑safety personnel and the importance of coordinated inter‑agency cooperation during critical incidents.
