Reno’s Wildest Free Afternoon Starts at Animal Ark — Wait, Try the Fleischmann Planetarium Instead

There is a moment, maybe ninety seconds into a fulldome show at the Fleischmann Planetarium, when the ceiling above you dissolves into the Milky Way and your brain simply forgets you are sitting in a building on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. That is the moment I became a regular.

The Fleischmann Planetarium & Science Center has been lighting up the north end of the UNR campus since 1963, and it remains one of Reno’s most genuine, most underappreciated cultural anchors. It sits just inside the university’s main gate off North Virginia Street, easy to find, free to park on weekends, and worlds away from the casino floors a mile to the south. The architecture alone is worth a look — that distinctive hyperbolic paraboloid roof is a confident piece of mid-century design that signals you are somewhere worth your time before you even walk through the door.

Inside, the lobby functions as a small but well-curated science center. Glass cases display meteorites you can actually touch, including a chunk of the Campo del Cielo iron meteorite that fell to Earth roughly five thousand years ago. There are hands-on exhibits about light, optics, and the electromagnetic spectrum that are genuinely engaging for adults, not just a way to keep kids busy while they wait for the show. Speaking of which — the shows are the main event, and they are consistently excellent.

The planetarium runs a rotating slate of fulldome films on its 30-foot domed screen, covering everything from seasonal star tours narrated live by staff astronomers to produced films about black holes, the search for exoplanets, and the geology of our own solar system. Ticket prices are modest — typically in the five to ten dollar range depending on the program — and the live star talks are a particular highlight. Sitting in a reclining chair while a knowledgeable astronomer walks you through exactly what you can see in the Nevada sky that same night feels like the kind of experience that used to require a science museum in a major city.

Friday and Saturday evenings bring laser music shows, a tradition the planetarium has kept alive long enough to feel charmingly retro and genuinely fun in equal measure. Bring a friend who claims they are too cool for it. They will not be too cool for it.

What I appreciate most about the Fleischmann is its quiet confidence. It does not oversell itself. The staff are enthusiastic without being performative, the programming is substantive, and the whole experience leaves you stepping back out onto Virginia Street looking up at the sky differently than you did when you arrived. In a city that can feel relentlessly focused on the next card dealt or the next reel spinning, an hour spent contemplating the scale of the observable universe is a surprisingly radical act.

Plan to arrive fifteen minutes before your show, browse the meteorite cases, and let the dome do the rest. You can thank me later — preferably from your backyard that same night, eyes up.
